GREYHOUND DERBY BLOG: Julie Collier

THE GREYHOUND DERBY BLOG: Julie Collier with all the latest news from the world of greyhound racing as we countdown to #GreyhoundDerby2020

➡️ We are now just FIVE weeks away from the start of the Star Sports Derby. For me, this is the time to take some bigger prices before dogs start flying in trials and trial stakes round Nottingham and shortening! I’ve got my first ante post bet in the book this week, as you’ll read below…. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ Anybody who had any doubts at all over Ice On Fire’s ability has been well and truly proved wrong as he overcame what was probably not an ideal draw at a track that also wouldn’t be his preferred venue, to land the RPGTV Juvenile in style on Saturday night. It’s the first time I’ve seen the dog run in person and watching from the middle of the track I had to pinch myself as the boxes opened because for a moment I thought I was watching a handicap race! It’s like he get’s a length start on everything else, he comes out that quick. He truly is a superstar and, known as Duke in the kennel, he’s HUGE! Weighing in at 36.9kg Saturday, to the eye he is tall, bulky and strong looking. What a dog. I think all of us in the media have run out of words for him to be honest… Connections have since made the decision not to enter him in the Steel City Cup. We await to hear what his Derby preparation looks like because trainer Jimmy Fenwick stressed that he is a dog that likes his work. He’s still 9/1 for the Star Sports Derby. ➡️ Credit must go to Waikiki Lad, now in the hands of Ted Soppitt (from Nathan Hunt). He finished just 3/4l behind Ice On Fire when finishing strongly and closing on his rival. Before the race, on parade, I really noticed how fired up the dog looked. He was 100% raring to go. When I spoke to Ted I could tell he was trying to reign in his bullishness about the dog. He ran a stormer and after the race, Ted said he will massively improve and much prefer Nottingham to Sheffield. He’s currently an appealing 100/1 to win the Star Sports Derby. Ted could have a nice team of dogs for the Derby including Calzaghe Mint who has won three from three (100/1 ante post) as well as October 2018 son of Droopy’s Jet, Blackstone Milo who has already clocked 27.49sec over the 450m round Sunderland. He may be very very young for a Derby tilt but he has the speed and is 200/1 ante post. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ Newinn Taylor is firing on all cylinders in Ireland right now as he made it eight wins from eight career starts when flying from the traps and winning the Selachii Legal 525 final at Limerick in 28.37sec this week. He is a seriously fast greyhound and a meeting between him and Ice On Fire would be a race to savour. But as things stand, trainer Graham Holland is entering him for the Con Kirby Memorial rather than coming to Nottingham. What a shame, the likelihood is we won’t see him on these shores. ➡️ There has been some debate on social media this week around Bockos Doomie. Nobody doubts how fast the dog is and that he is a real contender for the Star Sports Derby and many think he shouldn’t be as big as the 40/1 he is. He’s won his last five races at Hove and Monmore and beaten some tough competition along the way. He clearly prefers a draw next to the fence but has also been effective from trap four, winning four out of four. Connections are extremely confident about the dogs ability and Patrick Janssen’s thinks there is a lot more to come! Doomie is yet to have a look round Nottingham but his price may well shorten once he does! LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ Lenson Bocko picked up the Greyhound of the Year award at the 2019 Irish Greyhound Awards this week after winning last year’s Irish Derby. The dog also had his first look round Nottingham clocking 29.50sec when running off at the first bend slightly, as so many do first time round. He will almost certainly improve next time round. He comes in as the second favourite ante post, 14/1. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ It was a good trial session at Nottingham on Monday and they will continue to get better and better now as we head closer to the Star Sports Derby. Lenson Austin, trained by Graham Holland for Len Ponder and Austin Wheelan, was the fastest over the 500m clocking 29.29sec off a 5.00 sectional. He’s still 50/1 with Star Sports for the Derby. Sparta Master also went well for Sharon Thompson winning his trial in 29.47sec and is a huge 100/1 ante post with Star Sports for the Greyhound Derby. LATEST STARSPORTS.BET GREYHOUND MARKETS

➡️ This week I went all the way up to Bradford in North Yorkshire to see one of my favourite dogs in training, Trickys Dumbo. He is on the comeback trail and would be quite a way off full fitness right now but still clocked 17.71sec over the 305m, the fastest of the sprint trailers, despite losing his footing slightly at the second turn. Crucially, he’s come off 100% sound and he’ll have another sprint trial before a four bend trial and a couple of trial stakes at the track he loves. You’ll see the kennel videos in a couple of days on Star Sports and hear all about Robert Holt’s thoughts on the dog. If he comes back to being the dog he was, he has every chance of making the final in my opinion. He’s my first bet in the book! Currently, 33/1 with Star Sports. ➡️ There were also a few trial stakes races in which Barry Denby’s Upton legend went quickest (29.46sec +60). He runs Nottingham really well and can do it from the front or from off the pace so, once he led, he wasn’t for catching! He’s 150/1 for the Star Sports Derby.
