KENNEL VISIT: Patrick Janssen has a nice team of dogs for this year’s Star Sports Derby, including leading contender Bockos Doomie. In the first of Star Sports kennel visits and with less than nine weeks until the first round, we take a more in depth look at some of the in form trainer’s chances.
Bookos Doomie is the shortest price English dog in the ante post market for the Star Sports Derby…and it’s easy to see why. Quite simply, the dog is a win machine. For the first time, Patrick Janssens will head into the Derby with a dog he truly believes can win it. Here he tells us why, for him, Doomie is a bet at 16/1.
Lenson Whelan came into Patrick’s kennel just before the 2019 Star Sports Derby where, after finding trouble, he got knocked out in a very hot heat in the second round. The dog is now very settled and was runner-up in the Steel City Cup just before lockdown. A dog that’s rarely out of the frame, at three and a half years old, he is another contender for Patrick in the Star Sports Derby.
Kilara Lion is a brand new recruit to the Janssen’s camp. Formerly trained by Alex Hopkins at Nottingham, Patrick believes the dog loves the track that is the current home of the Star Sports Derby. This is one to watch that could be anything.
Seaglass Tiger is a dog that Patrick has always thought the world of, as much for his attitude as his ability. The 2019 Gold Cup sadly broke a hock at the end of last year but has now recovered and come back in great form. Here Patrick explains why he thinks he might now be a better dog at Nottingham.
Patrick also has a handful of youngsters in his kennel whose progress has been slowed down a little due to the lockdown. He’s keeping a watchful eye over this quartet over the coming months to see if they are ready for the biggest and best competition of them all, the Star Sports Derby.
