Graham and Nicky Holland have won the Irish Derby three times, but the English Derby has, so far illuded them. As English trainers in Ireland, it’s a competition they would dearly love to add to their illustrious CV. This year the team are heading over with no less than eight runners! And with fewer pre-Derby visits than previous years, they’re trying to do things a little bit differently this time around, as Nicky Holland explains.

Bockos Leah runs in a very hot heat 8 which is far from ideal for a super fast bitch who is only just coming out of season. If she can sneak through, she will certainly be one who keeps improving.

Part Blake is ante post favourite for the Star Sports Derby in places. The Irish St Leger finalist hasn’t quite come back to the form of last year – yet! He did, however, win his only trial stake around Towcester suggesting it’s a track where he could thrive.

Russian Glory has some terrific form in Ireland and is another strong running sort for the team. He’s had a couple of trips to Towcester, one of them finishing second to the track record breaking performance of Sporting Chile.

Bockos Vieira goes in heat 27 and it’s certainly one he can qualify from. He clocked a fast 29.49sec in his first trial then came third in a trial stake but that was only his 9th ever race.

Bockos Budsit is a stunning dog who clocked 29.37sec when winning his only race around Towcester pre-competition. Another who is lightly raced but in a hot enough heat.

Knight Tornado takes on Romeo Magico in heat 29 in a clash of the Holland titans. Tornado is an experienced dog with plenty of experience under his belt, including making the final of the Gold Cup at Shelbourne Park. Romeo Magico beat defending champion Thorn Falcon in his pre-competition run in a fast 29.32sec. There is a lovely story to Magico as well who is coming ‘home’ for the Derby.

Romeo On Fire was based on these shores for a time and was last seen in the Blue Riband at Towcester in the hands of John Mullins. He has since changed kennels and moved to the Holland’s and looked in good order when winning at the start of the month in 29.42sec.
