Interview: LUKE HARVEY The eldest of a family of seven, Luke Harvey and his siblings qualified for free school lunches at the local comprehensive school where he left at 16. After serving his time as a stable lad and riding point to points Luke became a successful jockey winning several big races. When he hung up his boots he joined the ranks of the press, he was rewarded after 20 years graft by being voted ‘HWPA Broadcaster of the Year’ by his peers. He’s now working on terrestrial TV for ITV Racing as well as At The Races and still rides out every day, truly in love with ‘The Game’ – Meeting Luke Harvey.

Luke Harvey talks about how thrilled (and surprised) he was to win the HWPA ‘Broadcaster of the Year’ award. His early life living in Bampton being the eldest of seven children and his love of horses plus how he started out leaving Tiverton Comprehensive at 16 to follow his dream of becoming a jockey.

In part two, Luke talks about his successes during his riding career starting with Taberna Lord and Cool Ground, being asked not to win, antics as a jockey plus the dangers that they face during races. He discusses having a collar bone removed but always managing looking forward not backwards and the moment he decided that enough was enough and decided to quit riding.

In the final part, Luke talks about ‘that’ video with Barney Curley, John McCririck and himself and how it unfolded and ended. He also talks about how bookmaking has become a bit of a dirty word and fondly remembers professional punter, Dodger McCartney and bookie Jack Lynn. His ambition is to be a trainer but explains why he thinks it may never happen. He finishes up talking about racing today and his love of the game and life.
