It’s that time again!
🐶 The countdown to the Star Sports #GreyhoundDerby2021 is on!! With just four months to go until we kick off with the first round on 4th June, we all genuinely have something to look forward to in these testing times. This year’s Derby at Towcester promises to be bigger and better than ever before. LATEST DERBY PRICES
🐶 Towcester have promised us a festival/party weekend for the final which will include heats of a category one Puppy Competition on the Friday evening, 9th of July. I am sure everyone reading this will want to be there and the good news is, you can secure your place this week because tickets and accommodation are going on sale! Keep an eye on social media and the Towcester website (www.towcester-racecourse.co.uk) to secure your spot. LATEST DERBY PRICES
🐶 There are lots of plans in the pipeline for entertainment, food, drinks and maybe a couple of other surprises too! In the coming weeks I will bring you all the updates in this blog so make sure, if you haven’t already, you give @StarSports_bet a follow. LATEST DERBY PRICES
🐶 Nathan Corden, who did such a good job of organising a brilliant Derby at Nottingham last year, in the most difficult of circumstances, is now at Towcester as Kevin Boothby’s right-hand man. He has also taken it upon himself to organise a pre-Derby greyhound sale at Towcester on the 21st April which he says ‘will give everyone a chance to buy a Derby dog.’ Better get saving those pennies!!!! 🐶 Towcester is currently staging the category one Blue Riband which didn’t get off to the best of starts with the weather and traps playing havoc and a couple of high profile injuries including to Bockos Doomie (pictured below), who was a leading English contender for the Star Sports Derby. Sadly, Doomie didn’t make it through his operation, much to the devastation of his trainer Patrick Janssen’s and his family as well as his owners Bev Lochead and Graham Box. I was lucky enough to meet Doomie a few times. He was such a striking dog who Patrick was particularly fond of. I would love to have seen if he could have taken his chance at Towcester. We will never know. RIP champ.
🐶 As far as the Star antepost betting looks, at the moment, David Mullins Tenpin (pictured below) is the favourite at 20/1. The supremely talented Romford Puppy Cup winner and Kent Derby finalist also won the Puppy race at Nottingham on Derby final night last year. He is a December 2018 dog that oozes class and is rated very highly by his kennel. I know Dave Mullins wouldn’t swap him for anything. He is beautifully bred out of Romeo Recruit and Droopys Sarafina and is so versatile in that he seemingly handles any sort of track. He hadn’t raced since November when he went to Monmore on Saturday night to line up in a tough open against race favourite, Queen JessieJ. David had said he really needed the blow out. Well, he won by an impressive six and a half lengths, much to the joy and relief of his trainer. He will be heading to Towcester ‘soon’ for a trial so keep an eye out for that. That 20/1 could look huge in a matter of weeks. LATEST DERBY PRICES
🐶 The Irish have pinched our Derby at Nottingham the last two years, Paul Hennessy winning with Priceless Blake in 2019 and then Pat Buckley landing the 2020 renewal with Deerjet Sydney just 3 months ago. As things stand, they have seven runners of the top ten in the betting. Sydney himself is a June 2018 whelp so will have just turned three years old when we get underway at Towcester. All being well, he will defend his title and is currently a 40/1 chance with Star Sports. LATEST DERBY PRICES
🐶 Fresh off the back of winning the 2020 GWA Services to Greyhound Racing award, Ben Keith (pictured below) is feeling ‘deeply touched’ and ‘over the moon’ to have been recognised in this way. I can tell you he is more buoyed than ever to ‘go big’ for this years Star Sports Derby and of course, with a prize pot of £175,000 to the winner, we have a chance of trying to reach a wider audience and make them aware of the best greyhound race in the world. Ben says he will ‘throw the kitchen sink’ at the Derby (hopefully not literally), but everyone can do their bit; tweet away using @StarSports_bet and #GreyhoundDerby2021. LATEST DERBY PRICES
