Julie Collier Blog 11: #GreyhoundDerby2021

Julie Collier is back with her latest #GreyhoundDerby2021 blog!

🐶 Well it really is all to play for in this year’s Star Sports Greyhound Derby. Looking at the ante post betting, you’d be forgiven for thinking Pat Buckley has it in the bag with the first two in the betting. Knocknaboul Sid has ‘clicked’ and is 2/1 favourite outright and defending champion Deerjet Sydney is next in at 5/2. If the later were to win, we really will be witnessing a piece of history. Back to back Derby’s for the Buckley’s and only the 4th ever dog to win back to back Deerby’s and the first ever to complete that feat at different tracks. The enormity of that can not be underestimated. Pat, as ever, a man of few words told me this week that his dogs were simply ‘super’. He himself is as short as 8/13 now to win the competition. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 The cream always rises to the top doesn’t it? Paul Hennessy has been there and done it twice before himself with Priceless Jet and Jaytee Jet. Now his Beach Avenue lines up as a 16/1 chance and as a dog who is literally never out of the frame, it would be more of a surprise if he wasn’t in the final. Paul had achieved great things in the world of horse racing in the last few months but be in no doubt that winning the greyhound Derby still means the world to him, Susan and the rest of the family. He even managed to figure out how to work zoom (eventually) to be able to chat to Lofty and I. Have a listen on Star Sports content page. He also made some great points about his connection to Patrick Janssen’s Kilara Lion. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 Talking of Lofty, it seems my TV husband had a rough weekend of it on Saturday night when Ben Keith turned up and lost of most of the profits from the previous few weeks in laying £4,000 at 7/4 for Knocknaboul Syd. These two are great friends and it really is quite an endearing, love/hate sibling type relationship! I myself was hoping to see my TV hubby (Lofty) at his absolute best on Derby final night as he has been making trips to London to get fitted for a new suit. However, it turns out the handmade outfit won’t be ready. They’re trying to source more material to go round the waist region (Lofty’s words, not mine.) LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 Could this be the year that Patrick Janssen’s adds the Derby to his CV? Well, he has the most contenders with three still going for him and who would have thought last year’s standard dog of the year would be the outsider of all of them? This Derby has been one of the most open in years and I think that’s reflected in the fact that Kilara Lion is the 50/1 outsider of the field at the semi-final stage. He may not have won a race yet BUT, this dog knows how to win competitions. And he is in the best hands. As Patrick told me this week, he is an absolute pro and a very clever race dog. I wonder if Patrick could get all three of his through from the same race!? It’s a big ask but he reports them all in great order and thinks Falcon is well drawn in trap 6 and that although Belly has a tricky draw, with a run, he is good enough to qualify. This is one kennel that really deserves their first Derby finalist. Maybe two? Or three!? LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 The only other runner for England is Jimmy Fenwick’s Cold as Ice who, although yet to win a race, posted a 29.27sec last week behind Deerjet Sydney in what was a much improved performance for the Newcastle raider. That leaves EIGHT Irish runners in the semi’s and they’re 1/7 to win. At this stage, nationality doesn’t really matter, we all just love watching these great animals. But fair play to the Irish, it’s been an even bigger effort this year in Covid times, than ever before. I will just avoid Mr Fortune for the foreseeable… LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 Bombardier was a runner in the Derby for Pat Buckley and will line up in the Derby Plate on Saturday night under new ownership, as the dog was bought this week by Nic Jeal and will hopefully run in his wife, Amanda’s name come tomorrow night. The dog will stay with Pat till after the Derby Plate then go to Mark Wallis for a tilt at the Sussex Cup before being stepped up to eight bends. He’s a very exciting dog and definitely one to watch. Best of luck to his new owners. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶The debate around the Towcester traps since the track reopened has been endless. The old Peterborough boxes were bought in prior to the competition and everyone seemed happy. But there is still a question mark over trap 1. Indeed, Kevin Hutton was gutted to have both his Derby quarter finalists in trap 1 and both subsequently exited the competition after running so well from other boxes. He has now reseeded them as middle for Saturday night. It did reminded me of the look of devastation on Kevin’s face immediately after Magical Bale drew trap 1 in the first Derby final at Nottingham when dogs really weren’t breaking there either. But then remember the Wimbledon trap 1 ‘who doo’? Taylors Sky eventually broke it but it was a long time coming. Is it a trap 1 thing? Or is it that trap 1 generally, at this level, isn’t an ideal box? There are people far more qualified than me to answer that and I am sure the debate will rumble on long after the Derby is finished. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 The obvious issue with the traps earlier in the week has been addressed after it was discovered a pipe in one of the three compressor split causing air to leak and the traps to open much slower than normal. Thankfully, no greyhounds were hurt and hopefully, normal service is resumed. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 It’s been wonderful to see the GBGB ambassadors parading their retired dogs at Towcester through the Derby and raising money for homing hounds. Kelly Windebank tweeted a lovely photo of her two ex-racers, Darcy Grey and Savana Donie saying they were exhausted after ‘mentally running a few races at Towcester’. They never lose the desire to run. I’d love to bring Lola to meet you all some time. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 In other betting news this week, there has been money for Gaytime Milo and Bockos Belly in the outright markets and a bit for Newinn Session in his heat as well for which we are top price, 8/1. Glengar Bale has been a popular bet in his semi final too. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 So the semi’s are upon us. This is the night that nobody wants to go home. I’d like to wish all owners and trainers a heartfelt ‘good luck’. I already don’t want it to end! LATEST DERBY PRICES
