JULIE COLLIER Blog 4: #GreyhoundDerby2021

Julie Collier is back with her latest #GreyhoundDerby2021 blog!

🐶 I have to start this month’s blog with the news that Ice On Fire is back in training! The October 2017 dog hasn’t raced since February 2020 when he won the RPGTV Juvenile and was retired last September after trying to make a comeback ahead of the 2020 Star Sports Derby. He has been standing at stud and has pups on the ground but after trainer Jimmy Fenwick reported the dog to be full of beans, he is back trialling again! He came back over the sprint trip with a 16.91sec effort. The fastest time of the year so far is 16.78sec to give that some context. Fingers crossed he can keep coming forward. The signs are good. In his second trial back he clocked 16.84sec and enjoyed a well deserved cheeseburger treat for his efforts. If you haven’t seen the video, have a look @thereal_iceonfire on twitter. He’s a very happy boy and very proud of himself too, as he well should be. He’s currently 66/1 ante post with Star Sports. Good luck to trainer Jimmy Fenwick and his family and owner Dave Spraggon. I hope that it keeps going to plan. What a story it would be… LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 The Con and Annie Kirby Memorial at Limerick always throws up a few dogs to watch that may well be heading over for our Derby and this year was no different. The favourite going into the final was Explosive Boy, trained by Pat Guilfoyle and a son of Good News who Pat trained to Irish Derby glory. The dog does indeed have explosive early and although ultimately finishing 4th in the Kirby final, he is a dog for the coming year and beyond for sure. At the moment, there are no plans for him to come to England. He’s only an April 2019 and Pat is in no rush with the dog. If he were to come, he will be sent to the kennel of Kevin Hutton to be trained, as Pat is a school teacher by day and has commitments in Ireland. Watch this space. He’s in the betting at 33/1. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 The winner of the Kirby was Stonepark Leo trained by Mark O’Donovan, son of legendary trainer Michael O’Donovan. Mark only got his trainers licence this year but has already had great success winning the Juvenile Derby and Select Stakes with Skywalker Barry and now adds the 80,000 Euro Kirby to his CV. The family have a history with the English Derby but it’s been reported that Skywalker Barry won’t be coming for the Derby. So it remains to be seen if Stonepark Leo will make the trip. He’s currently a 66/1 chance. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 Another dog back in action and in highly pleasing fashion is Southwood Jet. Last year’s Star Sports Derby favourite hadn’t raced since last December, but in his latest sprint trial at his home track, Hove, he clocked a dazzling 16.16sec. On Monday he went to Towcester for a first look there and on a track given as 10 slow, clocked 30.04sec. He’s reported in great shape by the kennel who are planning to keep bringing him on slowly. He’s currently 40/1 ante post. Shorter than that though, coming in at 33/1, is another Rees runner in the shape of Hilight Arkle. He’s only had the three races here in the UK, winning his last 500m open at Hove in a swift 29.28sec. He’s another son of Good News. Youngster Burnchurch Mick who doesn’t turn two till May will complete their squad at 100/1 in the betting. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 Mark Wallis is building a decent little Derby team and has added another one in the shape of Ballymac Gaybo. The November 2018 dog is terrifically well bred out of Droopys Jet and TV Trophy winner, Ballymac Bonnie. He has a fantastic turn of early and a 28.25sec on his card at Shelbourne Park. He was runner-up in a classy unraced stake there and then a Juvenile Derby finalist. He’s owned by The Craic Only syndicate which includes Paschal Taggart, Dave Lawrence, Mark Wallis himself and is headed up by Johnny Donohoe. They will all be hoping he stays the 500m at Towcester. He’s 50/1 ante post with Star Sports. Other runners Wallis hopes to enter include Winter Derby finalist Coolavanny Kyser, Hopes Bullet and also Agincourt Xena. She won the British Bred race on Derby final night and Wallis believes is one to look out for in the ‘best bitch’ market. She clocked 30.12sec winning her three-dog trial on Monday and is 125/1 ante post at the moment. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 There has been movement in the kennel of Nathan Hunt as well. Firstly, the most expensive dog bought at the Towcester Sale last week by Leigh Harris has gone into Nathan’s kennel. Appreciate It sold for £9,800 and is being primed for a tilt at the Derby, of course boosted by the news that Greyhound Trader and GAIN Greyhound Nutrition have offered a £10,000 bonus to any greyhound sold at a Greyhound Trader sale that goes on to win the Star Sports Derby. The initiative means both the new owner and vendor, in this case, Damien Matthews, would receive £5,000 each. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 In the last few days, Nathan has also got Ropewalk Bhoy, known as ‘Paddy’ into his kennel ready for a crack at the Derby for the Hungarian Bhoys syndicate. Nathan says he ‘looks the part’ and will be qualified in at Towcester in the coming weeks after being marked up. The 2019 Irish Gold Collar winner is owned by a group of Hungarians, adding an international twist to this year’s Star Sports Derby. He’s currently 100/1 in the betting. Nathan is also hopefully about Ballyard Ricki. He was off the track for five months after being pulled out of the Derby Plate last year but is coming back to his best. He’s 125/1 ante post. LATEST DERBY PRICES

🐶 There has been plenty of money coming in over the last month for a few runners. Firstly, following a number of dogs appearing to slip coming out of the Towcester boxes, news came that they are changing them. The Peterborough traps will be installed soon and hopefully put paid to any problems. That announcement saw money come for fast-trapper Knocknaboul Syd who is now 20/1 joint ante post favourite. There was also money for Newinn Session after he won at Shelbourne Park on Saturday night, also 20/1. And Roxholme Sheikh has been backed following his win at Nottingham on Monday priced at 3/10, clocking 28.28sec over the 480m. He is now the shortest priced UK dog at 28/1. LATEST DERBY PRICES
