JUST WILLIAM: Bini, Vidi, Vici
Hello – and Happy Greyhound Derby Day!
The big event of the year for Star Sports begins this evening at 6.35, and if you aren’t into your dog racing then there’s no time like the present to begin. All the information, stats and coverage you could ever want is below.
For what it’s worth, I’ve had four ante-post wagers on this year’s event, so avoid Thorn Falcon, Ballinabola Ed, Havana Bale Out and Signet Otis (apologies in advance to connections and other ante-post backers).
There’ll be lots more about the Derby from people who know later, but here’s what I’ve taken note of this week.
Bini, Vidi, Vici
Those of you who follow me will be aware that I absolutely adore the brilliant sport of professional cycling. The Giro D’Italia has been an absolute joy to watch so far, but the standout moment for me was decided when Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert Matériaux) made history on Tuesday’s stage, becoming the first black African to win a Grand Tour stage after a phenomenal sprint that was too strong for even the great Mathieu van der Poel.
The history this made was stunning – just look at the scenes below from Eritrean cycling fans in Egypt – and it’s also given hope to a million young riders in Afirca and beyond, but this moment tops it all off for me. I could simply write that Van der Poel give a thumbs up to his rival, but that wouldn’t give his incredible victory justice. Take a look below:
"If I was Biniam Girmay, I'd have that framed on every wall in my house!"

The Smash Hit Crew
Speaking of absolutely glorious, I am very much enjoying the Eurosport/GCN Coverage of the Giro. The fab foursome (my words) of Orla Chennaoui, Dan Lloyd, Adam Blythe and Robbie McEwen are at the top of their analysis game, but maybe that should drop a single soon with such photogeneric looks…..
No, no, no…we’ll need to work on this ahead of the arena tour. @mcewenrobbie @AdamBlythe89 @daniellloyd1 @discoveryplusUK @eurosport @gcntweet pic.twitter.com/5B3ncpPJk6

Stealing A Living
The three words above are a phrase I’m normally using to refer to any amount of charlatans who I think are terrible at their jobs (cue ironic laughter that me, of all people, is calling anyone out for stealing a living).
However, I feel it’s fully justified for Kit Malthouse, whose response to the compassion and sense of Andy Cooke’s suggestion that police officers should use more discretion regarding shoplifters considering the cost of living crisis was to say this:
“I have to challenge this connection between poverty and crime. What we’ve found in the past, and where there is now growing evidence, is that actually crime is a contributor to poverty. That if you remove the violence and the crime from people’s lives they generally prosper more than they otherwise would.”
Talk about being out of touch…
And whilst we’re on ministers who are stealing a living….
In answer to my question #NadineDorries said she thought 96% of the 56,293 respondents in her public consultation supported privatisation. She was wrong. The opposite is the case – as I explained to her. 96% of those her department surveyed opposed privatisation. https://t.co/ShEv0MafCH

Abolish…. The Treasury?
Not many of you would have heard of Stian Westlake, who – to cut a long story short – is one of the smartest people in British public life. It’s probabaly unlikely that you’ve heard of his plan to abolish the treasury, – but it’s well worth a read for anyone with even the slightest interest in politics.

Fox In The Henhouse
Loathe as I am to give him attention, Laurence Fox was on the BBC’s Politics Live earlier this week. This was presumably because he’s the leader of the Reclaim Party. That party is technically a national one, but it has won no election of any sort (nor come close, if my memory serves me correctly) whilst Fox came sixth in the London Mayoral election, being beaten by a YouTuber who ran as a joke. If the BBC is looking for a range of opinions on a topic, then they can surely do better (and no, ‘wokeness’ is not a suitable debating topic).
Not forgetting the fact that Fox has made his desire for the abolition of the licence fee most clear…..
