MINT….

Murray’s chances of a first Wimbledon success, as tipped up yesterday, took an unexpected bonus yesterday with the dramatic exit of Nadal in straight sets.

There’s a rather tenuous and frankly childish ‘mint’ link between Murray and today’s tip Kendal Mint at Newbury tonight.

As an aside, I could never really work out whether I liked Kendal Mint Cake or not. I put it in the same camp as Fisherman’s Friends – the type of sweet you feel obliged to eat if you are out long distance hiking or deep sea fishing in the North Sea but otherwise not really the confectionary of choice.

Kendal Mint, the horse, is a different proposition and I do like her chances tonight at Newbury.

She went into my notebook when third first time out over course and distance to Ligeia. She shaped really well that day but looked in need of the run and that run should have done her the world of good.

The Clive Cox trained filly was nibbled at in the market and sets the bar at a very decent level for the field of mainly debutants to aim at.

I fully expect Kendal Mint to open her account here tonight.

BUMS ON SEATS

A row has broken out over the number of empty seats on the main courts at Wimbledon on the first day of the championships.

Swathes of unoccupied seats were shown on television with many blaming the number of tickets set aside for sponsors.

Sports personality Gary Lineker vented his frustration on Twitter: “Lots of empty seats on centre court. Corporate lethargy no doubt.

“What a waste of tickets so many could give their right arm for #wimbledon.”

Tennis fan Neil Harris tweeted: “Please can someone explain to me as if I’m a 2 year old why there are empty seats at #Wimbledon2013 yet can’t buy ticket to save my life!”

The criticisms echoed those last summer over the number of vacant seats at the London Olympics.
