POV: Club World Flop (Joe Citrone)
In our DAILY column POV – Star Sports’ Social Media Assistant and football writer JOE CITRONE discusses the lukewarm reception to the new Club World Cup….
One-sided scorelines, half-empty stadiums and, seemingly, very little interest. The new Club World Cup hasn’t exactly got off to a rip-roaring start, writes JOE CITRONE.
Theoretically, the concept of world champions from across the globe going toe-to-toe with one another is appealing, but the reality of a bloated tournament with predictable outcomes – already crammed into a congested calendar – is a lot less fun.
The opening two results of the tournament really told their own story. A flat, lifeless, and dull 0-0 draw between Inter Miami and Al Ahly FC followed by a ridiculous mismatch between Bayern Munich and part-timers Auckland City, which ended in a 10-0 win for the German champions.
The biggest issue, though, and why I think the Club World Cup is really struggling to connect with people, is that most football fans can see through the facade and for what it really is – another football cash grab.
Call it off, give the players, and let’s look forward to an exciting 2025/26 season.
