PRESS RELEASE: Greens favourites to win Gorton and Denton after Labour snub Burnham

Greens 6/4; Reform 13/8; Labour drift from 4/9 to 15/8

The Green Party are now favourites with Star Sports to win the Gorton and Denton by-election after Andy Burnham was blocked from running as a Labour candidate.

Labour were as short as 4/9 to win the by-election on the news that Burnham intended to run, but they have drifted out to third favourites at 15/8 after it emerged that the party’s national executive committee had prevented the Mayor of Manchester’s bid.

The Greens now lead the betting to win the Labour majority seat, having shortened into 6/4 from 6/1, while Reform are close behind at 13/8 from 5/2.

Keir Starmer is 8/11 to be replaced as Labour leader this year.

William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “Labour’s decision to block Andy Burnham from running in the Gorton and Denton by-election could well backfire, with a backlash from many MP’s in the North West and supporters of Burnham giving the Greens and Reform a big opportunity.

“Labour were as short as 4/9 to retain the seat when Burnham announced his intention to stand, but with him being snubbed by his party, they have drifted out to 15/8, behind the Greens (6/4) and Reform (13/8), whose odds have both shortened dramatically in the last 24 hours.

“Having defended the decision to block Burnham from running, were Labour to lose their strong majority in Gorton and Denton, Keir Starmer would surely come under further fire, with the Labour leader odds-on at 8/11 to depart this year.”
