PRESS RELEASE: Jenrick new favourite in Tory leadership race after Patel exits
Robert Jenrick is the new 11/10 favourite to become the next Tory leader with Star Sports, following today’s first round results.
Priti Patel exited the race after failing to secure enough votes, leaving five contenders in the running to replace Rishi Sunak in November.
Jenrick leads former favourite Kemi Badenoch (5/4) after picking up six more votes in the first round, with Tom Tugendhat moving out to 15/2 from 5/1.
James Cleverly (8/1) and Mel Stride (40/1) remain in contention, ahead of next week’s second round of voting.
William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “Robert Jenrick has moved to the head of the market to become the next Tory leader, after securing the largest number of votes in today’s first round. He comes in from 13/8 to 6/5, overtaking Kemi Badenoch – who has drifted from 11/10 to 5/4 second-favourite.
“Tom Tugendhat is third in the running, while James Cleverly has shortened from 12/1 to 8/1, having finished just behind Badenoch in today’s vote.
“Mel Stride remains the outsider, 40/1 from 33/1, after picking up only two votes more than Priti Patel, who exits the contest.”
