PRESS RELEASE: Money comes for Jenrick in Tory leadership race
Robert Jenrick has been the name for support in Star Sports’ next Conservative leader market, having shorted significantly since Friday’s General Election result.
The MP for Newark was as big as 9/1 to replace Rishi Sunak as Conservative leader, but that price has shortened into 4/1 since the weekend.
Kemi Badenoch remains favourite at 15/8, having been 2/1 on Friday, while Tom Tugendhat is also a 4/1 chance alongside Jenrick.
Braverman and Farage major negatives in the market
Suella Braverman has been a major drifter in the market, after speculation she may have lost the support of a key ally in her leadership campaign, and having been 7/1 the former Home Secretary is now as big as 12/1 for the role.
Another major name that’s drifting is Nigel Farage, who is 22/1 having been less than half that price as results filtered in on Friday morning.
William Kedjanyi, Political Betting Analyst at Star Sports, said: “The Conservative leadership race looks set to be a fiercely fought battle and at the moment it’s Robert Jenrick that looks to have the momentum in the market, having shortened into 4/1 from 9/1 over the weekend.
“Kemi Badenoch is still holding onto favouritism and is also strong in the market at 15/8 from 2/1, while Tom Tugendhat also remains firmly in contention at 4/1.
“There have been reports that a key ally of Suella Braverman is instead expected to back one of her rival’s leadership bids and as a result her odds have drifted out to 12/1 from 7/1, while Nigel Farage is another big mover out to 22/1 from 10/1.”
