PREVIEW: AFC Wimbledon v Liverpool
[dropcap]B[/dropcap]ig night in South West London as AFC Wimbledon host Liverpool in a virtual repeat of the 1988 FA Cup Final when Wimbledon sensationally upset the odds for a 1-0 win courtesy of a Lawrie Sanchez header and a saved penalty.
The match is live on BBC1 – kicking off at 7.55pm.
It’s not quite a repeat though, as AFC Wimbledon are a new entity born out of the acrimonious parting of the original Wimbledon in 2002 to become MK Dons and the rest is history.
AFC Wimbledon was founded by the supporters but have yet to return to their home town – and are still ground sharing with Kingstonian at the Kingsmeadow Stadium for their League Two matches.
Brendan Rodgers, whilst likely to rotate some players, is not likely to underestimate the challenge of Wimbledon – especially with the match coming just days after Steve Gerrard’s announcement and will be looking for some more positive news on the pitch for beleaguered supporters.
Gerrard himself is likely to be rested or start on the bench whilst fellow striker Mario Balotelli is subject to a late fitness check after missing the rather lacklustre draw against Leicester on New Year’s Day.
Liverpool are 1/4 with Star Sports which looks about right but it wouldn’t be a price that would have me rushing in.
AFC Wimbledon are pretty good when it comes to scoring goals and on that basis I’m far more tempted by the 10/11 about both teams to score.
