PREVIEW: Not so open Sunday

[dropcap]T[/dropcap]here’s nothing like settling down in front of the TV and watching the final day of the Open.

That is, apart from when a player has a lead of six shots.

That’s the problem with sport. We seek perfection from players, horses and teams and then when we get it it’s no bloody good. (Unless of course you have backed Rory McIlroy that is and I haven’t).

Of course it’s fun for a while but the reality is when Germany beat Argentina 7-1 or when Frankel wins another Group 1 on the bridle all you can do is sit back and admire sporting perfection and forget about trying to find an angle betting.

McIlroy is safe in the knowledge that a safe round will see him through today and it’s up to the other players to take chances. Big chances.

Rather like being massively short stacked on the poker table.

Your only hope is sometimes to play daft, reckless poker, and you need to get lucky not once, but three, four or fives times.

Same for the McIlroy challengers today – they need to start playing those 9D/10D hands and get lucky.

Sports betting needs top class action but it also needs top class COMPETITIVE action to flourish.

For me, I’ll be watching the Open with a sense of anti-climax. And counting my losses – unless something miraculous happens.

For some further interest I’m having a small interest on Dustin Johnson on Star Sports at around 7/2 – that’s on the WITHOUT RORY market – obviously.

Just wish he’d stop spitting. No need for that in golf surely.

RECOMMENDED BET (scale of 1-50 points)

BACK DUSTIN JOHNSON to win the Open (WITHOUT MCILROY) for 3 points at around 7/2 with Star Sports

RETURN SINCE START OF WORLD CUP: PROFIT 21.71 POINTS
