PREVIEW: Two fillies back at Ascot

[dropcap]I[/dropcap]t was a day of winning favourites on Thursday – there’s nothing that punters should like more than the C word – consistency. When the ground settles down during high summer the market leaders always seem to take some pegging back.

A glorious afternoon is in prospect at Ascot this afternoon for their unusually ‘retro’ six race card which gets underway at 2.10 and includes a Listed race for fillies and the two mile Brown Jack Stakes. The ground is good to firm, good in places.

Thankfully, at the time of writing the non runner count isn’t as high as it was yesterday – we saw the feature race at Bath reduced to just two runners.

The banker for many at Ascot today will be Malabar in the opener. She finished second on debut at Haydock on soft ground and then ran a superb race at Royal Ascot when fourth (beaten around 2 1/2 lengths) in the Albany Stakes behind Cursory Glance.

Mick Channon steps her up in trip to seven furlongs today which looks sensible given she was staying on in the Albany in which she went off a 25/1 chance.

I think she’s a better filly than Crystal Malt and the only danger is if one of the debutants is well above average and the Star Sports market is not pointing that way.

Another Listed race and another favourite that will take some beating. Euro Charline looks a solid bet for the Listed Valiant Stakes after her solid effort at Royal Ascot when third to Rizeena in the Group 1 Coronation Stakes.

Two fillies with solid Royal Ascot form who look set to inflict further misery on the bookie chappies today.
