PREVIEW: World Matchplay Final

[dropcap]C[/dropcap]arlsberg don’t do World Matchplay Finals in Blackpool – but if they did you can be certain we would end up with a Taylor v MVG final.

And hey presto that’s what we’ve got in a fitting final to what’s been a great tournament at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

Speaking to Trevor on the Star Sports trading desk this morning he revealed that Taylor had been backed and has just been made narrow favourite at 5/6 – on the initial odds they couldn’t be separated at 10/11 each of two.

The fact that Taylor wasn’t favourite from the start is outstanding in itself given that the Power is seeking a seventh successive title – and 15th overall.

But the tight odds are also indicative of the tremendous progress MVG has made and the inevitable changing of the guard.

MVG is of course reigning World Champion after his win in January and is now into his first World Matchplay final having got the better of the Wizard from Down Under Simon Whitlock 17-13 in a far from one-sided semi-final.

Taylor also had to work mighty hard to get to the final – overcoming Gary Anderson 17-15. But he has looked as good as ever this tournament which has included a nine dart checkout in his match against Michael Smith.

A nice win for the column yesterday at Ascot with Kodi Bear – and I’m not planning to risk too much tonight. MVG to come out on top in what should be a thriller.
