Star Sports are saddened to learn of the passing of betting and broadcasting legend John McCririck today, aged 79.
A friend of the firm, and regular sparring partner with Ben Keith in the ring, John is survived by his wife Jenny ‘The Booby’ to whom we send our deepest condolences.
Big Mac, Ben and ‘Old Faithful’ in the Glorious Goodwood betting ring in 2017.
On hearing the news, Ben tweeted:
So sad to hear of the passing of Betting-Ring & Racing TV legend @RealMcCririck. John did more to promote Racing than ANYBODY & contrary to belief was such a gentle & kind person. Himself & @BoobyMcCririck the perfect couple. RIP BIG MAC #theyknew #comeracing

John was a unique character and fair to say irreplaceable. If you asked 100 people in the street to name ‘somebody to do with horse racing’ he would still get many votes.
John was part of TV racing for three decades – starting with ITV Racing, then Channel 4 Racing and also At The Races.
Prior to that, he won two investigative awards during his time as a journalist for The Sporting Life.
His outlandish style transcended horse racing though, as he was a regular on mainstream TV – notably two series of Celebrity Big Brother and also Question Time, underpinning that there was an old school, talented journalist behind the often pantomime facade.
RIP Big Mac, larger than life, never bland and we will all miss you terribly in your natural habitat – the betting jungle x
