I‘m still buzzing after Winter Power’s win in last week’s Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York. Thoughts this week have turned to her next target and hopefully all roads will now lead to Paris for the Prix de l’Abbaye. After that, it’s fantastic news that she will race on as a four-year-old and fingers crossed she will get the chance to defend her Nunthorpe crown !
Midweek it was nice to ride a double at Wolverhampton on Wednesday. Thaki and Whatwouldyouknow both pulled nicely clear to win their races.
Much quieter day for me on Saturday when I have two rides at Goodwood including Happy Power in the Celebration Mile. Thoughts below and on races elsewhere.
HAPPY POWER 3.35 tote Celebration Mile (Group 2)
My fella Happy Power handles the course well being a previous winner here and was only just beaten at the Glorious meeting over seven furlongs last time out when the ground was soft. He does like some cut in the ground, so I hope it doesn’t quicken up too much, but he’s a good horse on his day and won a Group 3 at this meeting 12 months ago.
We just need the race to fall his way as you always need some luck at Goodwood. The concern might be the mile trip might test him at this level. Whatever happens here, I’m sure there will be some nice targets in the autumn.
The obvious danger to us all is Benbatl. He’s been off the track for the best part of a year but this won’t be a negative as Saeed bin Suroor is so good at turning his horses out fresh. Now a seven-year-old, Benbatl will be hard to beat if showing his best form.
SKY POWER 4.10 tote.co.uk Handicap (Class 4)
Sky Power is having his first start for Ralph Beckett having joined from Richard Hannon and is also racing for the first time since being gelded. He’s run well in all his five starts and lost his maiden tag at Southwell last time out when we stayed on strongly to see off Notation in a race where the front two finished a long way clear. Any rain that’s about may help him as he has shown form with give in the ground and I’m hoping he will run well and come on for the run.
Thoughts on other Saturday races ….
3.15 Beverley William Hill Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes (Listed Race)
Lampang runs for King Power in the Beverley Bullet (3.15) and he has a nice draw in stall two. He’s a talented horse on his day and he needs a strong pace to aim at which he’ll definitely get in this and is interesting now stepping back in trip.
6.30 Windsor Sytner BMW Sunningdale & Maidenhead Winter Hill Stakes (Group 3)
Just four runners for this Group 3 prize including Bangkok who can hopefully follow up his Group 2 win at York last time. Despite the field size – it’s competitive and I’ll be cheering him home from the car on the way back from Goodwood!
