SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Greyhound Derby Third Round, Towcester Saturday

Tonight, with eight races and 48 runners, we will see the Greyhound Derby 2024 winner which is very exciting, writes SIMON NOTT.

What we didn’t expect to see and possibly even more amazing was Kaan’s tie! Readers of the heats trio of blogs would have read that his neckwear was commandeered by some Irish revellers so that they could gain entry to the more salubrious of Northampton’s nightlife after racing a couple of weeks ago.

Well, tonight it was returned with thanks, untrained too.

The surprises kept coming, the first bet of the day was £300 at 2/1 on Passenger at Punchestown.

The first couple of races were graded events but Lofty and Kaan the team tonight managed to get a grand on them. They also tried out Max Shoes on the joint, he gave it his best shot but decided that punting being the purveyor of quality footwear was more his game.

Another potential recruit was Sir Bob Cooper who is retiring from Sky Sports Racing in July. The first heat saw some decent money, an even monkey Trap 2 The Other Kobe, £3200 – £400 Singalong Dolly and £1500 – £450 Trap 6 Clonbrien Treaty.

As the dogs were going in the traps those bets were dwarfed by an even £5000 closely followed by another even grand on Trap 2. Trap 2 won, they knew.

Next up and the betting revolved around Trap 1 Ballymac Finn and Boylesports Bob running from Trap 6. Bets on the pair included £8000 – £4000 and £600 – £300 Trap 1 and £330 – £300 and £770 – £700 Trap 6 which made the book quite a hairy one.

Luck was on the firm’s side this time, Lofty and Kaan breathed sighs of relief when both the short ones missed their breaks which allowed Trap 3 Droopys Pivotel to take advantage and a commanding lead that proved unassailable though both short ones filled the places and qualified.

Next up and early bets of £1100 – £400 and £825 – £300 Trap 3 Bockos Thunder made that one the early bogie though Trap 6 Churchfield Syd was installed 5/4 as favourite. The betting was fairly quiet until a bet of £7500 – £6000 the jolly dwarfed everything else taken in the race. Just after that bet was struck Kim Sanzone came to the joint, not wearing her great coat which proved so lucky during the first heats, that despite staff donned green clobber being banned by Ben as he deems it unlucky.

Wear it next week Kim, Churchfield Syd broke well and won nicely. Back to square one was Lofty’s stoic summing up of the firm doing £9000 on the race. They also lost a monkey on the forecast, just to top things off.

Even though it’s not his money, Lofty takes it to heart when the firm loses. You could tell that as he started blaming the floorman for not ‘keeping him out’ in the next heat. They didn’t have a floorman, oh hang on he meant me. I started rattling them off neves to rouf on, eyes, score, cockle, double carpet, handful and he cried ‘That’ll do!’ Floorman always were the whipping boys when it was going wrong, I quite enjoyed my minute back in the job.

It’s funny how things change. Trap 1 Superfast Gorden was the hot favourite and attracted hot favourite money, £4000 – £7000 and a grand at the price were laid. Punters attempting to buy money left it behind this time. Droopys Doughnut from Trap 6 did the first a favour by beating the bogie to the first bend and maintaining the advantage from Trap 1 in second. The good guys were back in the game.

Next up and it was a slow betting heat until very late in when the firm laid £3250 – £500 Trap 2 Grouchos Duke,£1300 – £800, £1875 – £1250 and £4500 – £3000 Antigua Hawk running from Trap 5 and a whopping £11,250 – £5000 Glengar Martha from Trap 6. The bottom two were of course the bogies with Trap 6 the worst.

Of all those bets mentioned, the cleverest was ultimately the monkey on Trap 2 Grouchos Duke which won the race in some style from Trap 3 Edwards, the forecast went the firms way topping up a win book that copped £6415, ‘The worst winning in the book’ smiled Lofty who’d Aye Aye’d the winner all the way home, all thoughts of bollocking the floorman had dissipated along with the losing races.

The book was now winning £7500 with three heats to go. Time to kick on, but the punting being this ferocious it certainly wasn’t time for counting it.

Bets were modest by tonight’s standards in the next heat until a punter had £3500 on Trap 3 Gaytime Nemo right in the hole, at the off that one was losing £9999 in the book.

Luckily, Trap 1 Crafty Shivoo was too quick and won in a photo from Trap 4 with the bogie back in third.

The book copped £1300 over the winning 7/4 favourite which was very handy and boosted the winnings with two races to go.

Next up and the race that Kaan and Lofty said could easily have been the final with King Memphis and Swords Rex running from Traps 1 & 2 priced at 5/4 and 7/4 respectively. The betting mirrored the status of the heat, at least in respect of two bets, £5000 – £4000 King Memphis and £6000 – £3000 Swords Rex, there was very little else of noted bet size but business was steady.

King Memphis won impressively with a performance likely to make him the firm favourite for the Derby. Swords Rex qualified back in third. The book lost £1900, the lesser of two evils was Lofty’s summing up. Going into the last the book was roughly £7000 in front, still too early to snap the elastics bands around it tonight.

8.40pm Star Sports Greyhound Derby Round 3 – Heat 8

Going into the crucial last heat, it looked competitive, with Cooliogold running from Trap 2 heading the market at 2/1 with 9/4 Ballymac Slick snapping at his heels in the market from Trap 5 with Druids All Go and Unreal Bruiser not far behind. The first bets were on Trap 2, £800 – £400 and £600 – £300 struck.

That was followed by £4500 – £2000 which turned out to be a very handy last bet to lay. Trap 2 punters had the cup snatched from their lips, chinned on the line by Trap 5 which copped a monkey in the book and ensured a winning night.

We’re back next week for the Quarter Finals – bring it on!
