SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Greyhound Derby Third Round
There was no rain forecast for Towcester on my iPhone weather app, so it’s with some annoyance that the raindrops are affecting my typing of this opening premise, writes SIMON NOTT.
The little buggers make you hit bum letters but the hope was that it was nothing but a little pocket of freak precipitation.

The team of Kaan of Lofty remained unchanged from last week. Since then, between them, they’d managed to lose for the firm at Windsor on Monday and Kempton on Wednesday, that’s seven on the trot, the hope was that they’d see off the hoodoo and the punters would leave it behind lumping on in these more competitive third round heats.
There were four supporting races before the eight third round heats. The dynamic duo got stuck into them as there was a decent crowd in front of them and a buzz bigger than previous weeks. Ben, Georgina, Goldie and the ‘Greatest Dog Punter of All Time’ turned up after the second race, where the firm were the thick end of a grand down thanks largely to laying four monkeys the first winner.

The firm were surprised to see some big hitting horse racing punters in attendance along with a bag man, so it would be interesting to see if they got stuck into the dogs. The firm were betting on the fastest heat of the night too, which garnered some interest.
The betting on the first four races had been lively and augured well for the heats as there were plenty of the previously missing £50 and £100 bets. OK, sadly the punters were £1100 on the right side of the tussle.
But, that was a tussle, the real scrap, betting on the heats was about to kick off.

There were just five runners for the night’s first heat after Rackethall Brute was declared a non-runner earlier this afternoon. Sunnyside Broxi opened 11/8 favourite with Star Sports to win from trap one after having laid £2000 trap six Slick Sentinel at 7/4 early.
They then laid the six again, £2600 – £1600 to the trade which got them right in it, late on a bet of a £1500 – £1000 Sunnyside Broxi eased that liability a bit, well a grand. It was never a race, the bogie burst from the traps and the race never saw which way he went. The firm were immediately in it to the tune of £7846 on the first heat.

Bang, £4000 – £6000 was bet on Bombay Pat as soon as the price went up. Bang another £10,000 at 4/6 and bang another £4500 at 4/6 and £2000 at 8/13. Ladies and gentlemen, the boys had a bogie.
The punters still hadn’t finished, another had £400-£700 the jolly while there was good money for other dogs without the six dog. At last, it couldn’t have happened at a more opportune time, an Aye Aye from the good guys, Bubbly Charger won from trap four the book copped £21,500.
It’s lucky Lofty wasn’t a dog he’d have tripped over his second dick! The boys were back.

The momentum didn’t let up, the first bet in the book was £3500 – £2000 Ballinabola Joe running from trap five as soon as the prices went up. Wings might have been clipped and fingers burned in the previous race but the punters still got stuck in, £5500 – £4000 trap three De Lahdedah and £9000-£6000 Ballinabola Joe followed, a late £550 – £400 the three dog still didn’t make him a loser neither did the £6000 – £1000 March On Freddie make that one a loser either.
At the off Ballinabola Joe was a loser for £7223, but didn’t win and didn’t even qualify. De Lahdedah won the race and copped £4354 despite being the subject of a winning £5500 – £4000 bet. Phew.

All eyes were on Bocko’s Diamond running from trap five here. The firm were 1/2 the jolly but had already laid £4000 – £100 trap three Salacres Senan which was the early bogie but not expected to stay that way for long. Another fancied dog for the Derby outright, Cheap Sandwiches was a 2/1 chance to win from trap six, and an up the front two book was thought likely.
The punters stood back until late though, the £2400 – £3900 bet the jolly was as the dogs were going in the traps, as was the £6000 – £500 each-way Droopy’s Bookem. The race panned out how it was general expected, Bockos Diamond won the race but only just, Cheap Sandwiches finished with a right rattle almost getting up close home with the result going to a photo.
The book only lost £800 which Lofty said feels like winning.

The early business was centred around trap three Romeo Tomcat the first leg of a £1000 double and a £3000 – £1000 single. The next decent bet was £7500 – £2500 Prince Naseem running from trap one, a dog that TGDPOAT said he fancied too.
Pro-punter Lester said he was against it, the plot thickened like grandma’s stew, it seemed that there might be a race on. The rain had stopped up to this point and the bookies had been asked to remove their mushes for the viewing pleasure of the punters.
Late on bets of £2500 and £1000 at 3/1 trap two Droopy’s Aladdin further bulked the betting and proved unfortunate wagers to lay as the blue dog did the business winning by a length from trap five and took the bounce out of the Star boy’s steps losing £6046 in the win book.

There was a danger those mushes might have to go back up again as the rain spotted and wind blustered, threatening to dampen things further, there had been a £14,000 difference between first and second in the last race. Droopy’s Trade was 6/5 jolly to win from trap one here, but didn’t attract any immediate takers. There was £1600 bet on Tiffield Tarquin at trap five mid betting, plenty of brisk smaller business, then a bet of £3000 on Droopy’s Trade at 6/5 right in the hole.
A bit bizarrely, a chap with a bugle, no not ‘bugle’ but an actual bugle, that started to play, to mixed reaction as the dogs went into the traps. There was also mixed reaction when Droopy’s Trade just hung on in a photo from the fast finishing Hello Diego, cheers from the crowd and groans and a bit of swearing from Lofty and Kaan, an eight grand turnaround once again in favour of the punters who copped £2700 from the hod of Star Sports.

Bets on the penultimate included £6000 – £5000 and £1250 – £1000 Faypoint Harvey in the red jacket, £3000 – £300 Vhagar from trap four and £3000 – £1000 Singalong Molly running from trap five.
It looked like the wheels were coming off when Faypoint Harvey pinged the traps and shot a couple of lengths clear but was run down close home by Singalong Molly, which this time was an £8000 turnaround in favour of the firm, which copped £2828 in the win book.
The lone bugler started up again post race, but his tune wasn’t a lengthy one, maybe sensing his audience wasn’t all that appreciative.

The lucky last looked very competitive, with Sole Mio the 7/4 jolly to win from trap three. Going into the race, Lofty said the win book was copping £10,000, Kaan’s without book losing £2000 so £8000 in front all in going into the race.
The boys had punters dough in their nostrils and were getting into it calling the punters in feeling tonight was there night, then a respected punter bet £6000 – £3000 and another £7000 – £4000 trap six Churchfield Syd which threatened to ruin the night, Kaan hopped off the stool and hedged £3000 – £1500 in the hope they’d go home winning whatever happened.
They probably did the right thing regardless but the bogie was beaten into third behind Sole Mio, the win book copped £5913, it went to the wire but was a cracking winning night winning £15,800 in the end. It went right to the wire on the fastest heat betting, it was the last heat, won in 28.64 which had been a 14/1 chance.
