SIMON NOTT BETTING BLOG: Newmarket Wednesday
Back at Newmarket today there was definitely a bigger crowd than yesterday but, not wishing to be too negative, that wouldn’t have been hard, writes SIMON NOTT
The staff today were unchanged, Pam and Nick taking the bets and me hovering around hoping to hear some decent bets placed.

1:50 – Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap (Class 2) (4YO plus)
There was a decent bet in the opening handicap £2000 at 13/8 the jolly Double Rush, it didn’t seem too bad a wager to lay in a big field early season race.
It didn’t look so clever a dozen minutes later when Oisin Murphy eased Andrew Balding’s colt into the lead and drew away to win unchallenged at 11/10. Worse news was that Nick and Pam only managed to take an additional £315 on the race where they lost £3320, “Yes including £12 on the places” chipped in Nick with more than a hint of gallows humour. Then it started to rain, the stage was set.
2:25 – Betway Feilden Stakes (Listed) (Class 1) (3YO only)
The rain came to nothing much but was still in the air which was pretty blustery, though there was no bluster about the punter that waded in for a bet of £15,000 – £8000 Poseidon’s Warrior. That was pretty much it, though could have been more as a bookmaker asking for £1500 – £800 was politely declined as 7/4 was on the board.
That refusal was slightly regretted as 14/1 Morshdi made mincemeat of the opposition which were led home by the bogie. The field book showed £8395 which meant, apart from the big bet, the rest of the field money was poor, bad luck too that £50 each-way of that was on the winner, still a cop of £7732 was handy.

3:00 – Betway Earl Of Sefton Stakes (Group 3) (Class 1) (4YO plus)
Next up, bookies had their chests out to get stuck into the tight looking six horse heat where they bet 9/4 each of two. Things were very quiet until the horses went to post where there was a bit of a flurry including a monkey at 15/8 the already shortened on the machine, Damysus into a book they held just £750 at the off.
Normal service was resumed in favour of the punters, Damysus won impressively, returned 7/4 and cost the book £748.
3:35 – Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Fillies’ Group 3) (Class 1) (3YO only)
Things came alive in the next, lessons need to be learned by the punters involved though, the first bet that came into the joint was £14,000 – £2000 Mubasimah which could have been £15,000 – £2100 with the fractions and then another had £3000 Asmeralda at 13/2, if he’d just said ‘with the fractions’ he’d have backed it to win an extra monkey, hold on, Jack Lynn’s words from beyond the grave are ringing in my ears ‘Don’t educate them Simon boy!’ I shouldn’t but anyone interested in fractions there is a blog on this site that explains them.
At the off there was £6001 in the hod and two big losers, Mubasimah losing £11,140 and Asmeralda £17,108. As the race was running, a gap in the clouds opened and light poured through, I thought for a moment it might be Donald Trump come to heal us all, but no, it was more likely the Gambling Gods shining down on the Rowley Mile and the bookies who’d suffered enough.
Azleet winning under Marco Ghiani for Stuart Williams at 50/1 was manna from Heaven for the ring, a virtual skinner for the Star Sports book. Aye Aye!

4:10 – Scorthy Champ Standing At Barton British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 2) (2YO only)
Next up and the big punters could be forgiven for seeking solace in a pint or slinking out of the back door licking their smouldering fingers. Whatever they were doing they weren’t betting with Star Sports who took £368 in total on the race.
Luckily, one of my previous #BettingPeople interviewees Rob Furber came over to say hello, he’s a professional punter who bets on reality TV, his interview can be viewed here.
Meanwhile the ring enjoyed another cracking result when 20/1 shot Magic Effort won, I say the ring enjoyed it, Nick and Pam didn’t because the book lost £912 thanks to a bet of £60 each-way the winner. Oh well, the plus figure was still a healthy £7948.
4:45 – Molson Coors British EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 2) (3YO only)
There was a bit of excitement in the penultimate when a rails bookmaker came into the ring hedging the £28,000 – £1000 each-way Summer In Paris he’d laid over there. He bet £250 each-way at 28/1 with Star Sports and moseyed along snapping up the same price where ever he could. Nick piped up, ‘Just as well we laid that because we’ve only fielded a pony’.
The rest of the money bet in the race was smallish but the last bet in the book was £280 at 11/8 the jolly, So Regal, bringing the field money total to £1198 with Summer In Paris losing £6436 in the win book and a chunk if placed too. That last bet in the book meant that So Regal only copped £60 in the win book, boosted to £211 when the places were taken into account, Summer In Paris was arguably unlucky in running finishing out of the money in fourth.
Remember the last bet in the book with Star Sports on course was bet at 11/8 virtually as they were running? She was returned 6/5, punters betting at home, to quote Johnny Rotten, ever felt cheated?
5:17 – Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap (GBBPlus Race) (Class 3) (3YO only)
Regular readers will know that when reporting for this firm you can never count it. A rails bookie hedging £7000 – £2000 Evanesco ensured that was the case again, a punter bet £1000 – £500 High Storm which added to the field money in a book where Evanesco was losing £6300 so a winning day was still ensured with the horses going behind.
One of the day’s earlier big punters was sniffing around the jolly looking for bigger than 2/1 but didn’t get it. By the off, High Storm was a 13/8 chance and a good winner in the book which held just £2755.
Ultimately it was a shame they didn’t lay him, 16/1 Archers Bay did the business for the ring though wasn’t unbacked with Star Sports the book won £1685 on the race and £9844.50 on the day. Happy days and it didn’t rain.
We’re back tomorrow for what I’m told we be the busiest day of the week.
