SIMON NOTT: Lumpy Sunday
The firm were braced, though at the same time hoping, for more of the same after Saturday’s chunky business. On normal Sundays you might expect modest volume of business, but the word ‘normal’ is a bit old fashioned these days. It was very late on in the betting for the Betway Brigadier Gerard Stakes that a punter called for a lump on Elarqam, £100,000 at 11/8. The intrepid backer and indeed the firm both got some value in the excitement stakes. The bogie appeared beaten as 3/1 shot Lord North took the race by the scruff of the neck going away at the distance. You should never count it though, rings of steel were required for the firm as Elarqam found another gear flashing home at the finish, ultimately denied by just a short head at the judge. That was £100,000 in the bag for the good guys and a punter ruing their bad luck.
Meanwhile in twitter land boss Ben was asking for burger recommendations.
There was huge anticipation that the high-rollers would be back for a go on the Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes. The firm’s ante-post bad result was Quadrilateral – laid at 11/1 then 3/1 into 5/2 today so was the biggest loser in both markets. 4/1 winner Love (pictured above) was a winner in the book and given the connections, probably a bullet well dodged.
Another was dodged when a bet of £30,000 each-way was laid on Last Empire at 15/2 in the Betway EBF Cecil Frail Fillies’ Stakes (Listed), the 4.25 at Haydock. The bare figures show she finished 6th, but there were only a head and two necks in it from the frame and place money. It was starting to look like Lumpy Sunday was going Star’s way.
It didn’t take long for the next lumps to come winging their way into 08000 521 321, this time two £50,000 wagers at 11/10 on Eastern World. That’s £100,000 total and in close succession in the 4.45 at Newmarket, Betfair Exchange More Ways To Win EBF Stallions Novice Stakes (Div 1). There was a delay after Bullfinch was withdrawn at the start with the horses taken from the stalls. By the time the race was off it clashed with the 5.00 Haydock, luckily the TV focused on ‘our’ race by which time the bogie had been supported into 5/6. Punters will have heard commentator Ian Bartlett’s glee when a favourite looks like it was in trouble on numerous occasions, it’s music to your ears when he’s talking about the bogie though. King Leonidas under Frankie Dettori won it nicely, the jolly back in second, the rest nowhere, ‘Aye Aye Frankie’, phrases you never hear, from bookies anyway.
The heavy hitters ensured the phone rang red hot for the second division of the Novice Stakes. All the money was for Sunray Major with several bets were struck at 4/5, for ease of reporting totalling £120,000 at the off. Despite missing the break and running very green, the bogie eventually did the business for the punters in good style, giving back £96,000 and taking the shine off the afternoon’s hard-earned winnings in the process. The jockey? Frankie Dettori – no ‘Aye Aye’s’ this time.
A few of these sent out on our twitter this afternoon. Keep an eye out for any more lumps this week.
