SIMON NOTT: Nice business in Naas

One of the cries that bookmakers on course used to favour when a punter or floorman came in for a bet they considered a bit big for the market or meeting was; ‘Where do you think you are, Royal Ascot?’. I’m guessing the guys in the office are too polite for such rebuffs when the following bets were tendered on the telephone yesterday, that’s 08000 521 321 for people who like to talk to their bookies.

Punters, get your notebooks out because these bets could be illuminating. First up, the lads in the office get a call, just a £2,000 each-way bet, on Ontario in the 3.30 at Naas the Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden. That’s all fine and dandy until they found out it was a 40/1 chance. Despite not being Royal Ascot, the bet was laid. The horse finished 10th returned 20/1 but there’s a hint there notebookers.

Next up, a lumpy backer is on the blower for £50,000 on Ransom at 5/4 in the 5.20 the Betway Maiden Stakes. The punter was accommodated, there’s a bookie on course that goads punters that backing winners is ‘Money without work’, the way Ransom won it certainly was. The punters had the bit between their teeth it seemed. ‘Just £40,000 on Elfin Queen in the 6.05 at Naas please’. That was laid at 7/4, she won easing up at 13/8.

The final knockings of the evening came with a phone call, 08000 521 321, for Paradiso in the 6.35 at Naas Irish Stallion Farms EBF (C & G) Maiden. The punter wanted £30,000 each-way at 3/1 and got the bet. There must have been a few wry smiles on the trading floor to see that one finish fifth, concluding an exciting afternoon and evening’s business on the right foot. It wasn’t even Royal Ascot.

Look out next week!
