SIMON NOTT: Waded In and Weighed In too

Today should have been Derby Day, Coronavirus put paid to that but it was certainly D-Day as far as the big punters were concerned. They came out all guns blazing after a week of relative small stakes phoney war.

The opening salvo came in the Betfair Dahlia Fillies’ Stakes (Group 2) when punters didn’t mess about. A request for an even £100,000 on Terebellum was accommodated, quickly followed by another bet to win £100,000, this time the punter had to pull up £110,000 for the privilege, the evens compressed under weight of money to tips on. No sooner had the ‘Big Bets’ tweet been sent when another bet of £55,000 at 10/11 was laid right in the hole. Watching a horse win as easy as Terebellum did with a total of £265,000 in those bets alone is never easy.

The firm were braced for a slew of money Pinatubo in the Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes (Group 1), the big punters did wade in but not for the jolly. The first lump was an eyewatering £500,000 – £50,000 each-way Arizona then £375,000 – £50,000 each-way Wichita. The firm were only just allowing a sigh of relief when it looked very unlikely that Arizona was going to make the frame when it stuck in their throats. Going into the final furlong Wichita looked not only certain to make the frame but likely to win too. The sighs of relief from homeworking stations when he was just denied by 10/1 chance Kameko under Oisin Murphy (pictured) would have been very deep ones. A good pasting relegated to a thumped nose by a neck.

Despite the results going against the firm and there being no crowds at the races, it was good to find that the big punters were back and wading fearlessly in. It bodes well for some spirited betting in the coming weeks. Watch this space, it’s only lent.
