STAR BOXING PREVIEW: Fury v Makhmudov / Benn v Prograis

It’s a compelling weekend of boxing, with Tyson Fury returning to the ring to face Arslanbek Makhmudov, while Conor Benn goes up against former world champion Regis Prograis, writes JOE CITRONE.

After a year and a half away from the ring – and following yet another brief “retirement” – Tyson Fury returns with renewed focus, aiming to get his career back on track after consecutive defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.

The man standing in his way of that, which will likely lead to him finally meeting Anthony Joshua in the ring, is Russian titan Arslanbek Makhmudov

Makhmudov’s resume may not be packed with standout victories, but his 19 knockout wins underline the danger he carries. While Fury will be expected to come through this test, underestimating such power could be a costly mistake for him.

There have been several points in Fury’s career where he’s returned from extended layoffs and needed time to shake off ring rust. In those comeback fights, he often focuses on banking rounds and rebuilding rhythm, so a knockout victory doesn’t feel like the most likely outcome here. At 11/4 with starsports.bet, I am backing him to win on points.

Elsewhere, Conor Benn is also in action at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, where he will be searching for victory against former world champion Regis Prograis in his first fight under Dana White’s Zuffa Boxing promotion.

Since this bout was announced, there have been rumours swirling about the condition of Prograis, who at his best, has been involved in some terrific fights and produced some excellent performances, but reportedly has been struggling with injuries.

This makes Benn the clear favourite heading into the bout, particularly after his convincing win over Chris Eubank Jr. in his last outing, despite a tough cut in weight, dropping to 148lbs after coming in 11lbs heavier for the Eubank fight.

I expect him to come out all guns blazing here, though, and is expected to deliver a knockout finish. At even money with starsports.bet. I am backing less five rounds completed here.
