Barcelona head into the season as 8/11 favourites to retain the title, and it’s not exactly hard to see why after winning La Liga in relatively comfortable fashion last term.

But closest rivals Real Madrid will be desperate to wrestle back their crown, and there’s enough about them to make the starsports.bet price of 5/4 look interesting.

Jose Mourinho is back in Spain, although nobody is expecting the same Mourinho who was once considered one of the top managers in world football.

What he does still have, though, is an ability to grind out results, and as unimpressive as his resume has looked over the last few years, he’s still not struggled to make finals and win silverware.

The squad also gives him something to work with. Fresh off the back of a brilliant World Cup, Jude Bellingham is being dubbed one of the best midfielders in the world, and has the ability to drag Madrid through games when things aren’t clicking.

Vinicius Jr has also stayed despite plenty of transfer noise, while Yan Diomande adds another dangerous option out wide.

It’s far from guaranteed, of course. Mourinho will need time to settle back into Spanish football, and Madrid have had their fair share of false starts in recent seasons.

Still, they’ve kept their key players, added some pace and threat in attack, and brought in a manager who knows what it takes to win league titles. At 5/4, that looks worth taking a closer look at.

Atletico Madrid are 18/1 and, as usual, should make life difficult for everyone. Closing the gap on Barcelona and Madrid, though, looks a big ask. Real Betis (80/1), Athletic Club (100/1) and Villarreal (100/1) look more like contenders for the European places than the title itself.

Barcelona still look the team to beat. But Madrid have done enough this summer to make their 5/4 price worth a small interest.
