STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Mon: Ipswich v Southampton

Southampton travel to Portman Road on Monday night to face Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town in a match that could have huge implications at the top end of the Championship table, writes JOE CITRONE.

It simply cannot be understated just how impressive Ipswich have been this season and the job that McKenna has done at Portman Road.

It’s easy to forget that this is the Tractor Boy’s first season back in the second-tier following League One promotion last term because of how quickly and seamlessly they have transitioned. With seven games remaining, they are top of the table and are in with a real chance of back-to-back promotions.

Unfortunately, flying wing-back Wes Burns will be missing for this one after suffering a hamstring injury, but key man Conor Chaplin will be available after shaking off a knock.

Southampton also find themselves firmly in the promotion mix, but must bounce back from late disappointment against Middlesbrough in their most recent Championship outing.

It looked as if Russell Martin’s side were heading for an important victory on Good Friday, a win that would have kept them on the coattails of the chasing pack at the top of the table, but a 90th-minute strike from Emmanuel Latte Lath denied them all three points in frustrating fashion.

It now looks like, if Southampton are to make an immediate return to the Premier League, it’ll now have to be via the play-offs. They still, however, can have a big say in the automatic-promotion race on Monday evening.

I have a hard time splitting these two teams and can see a scenario in which they cancel each other out on Monday and that’s why I like the look of a draw at 11/4 with starsports.bet.
