Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are finding their rhythm at just the right time. Back-to-back wins over Bournemouth (5-1) and Everton (2-0) have lifted the Blues into the Champions League places, and the trip to Goodison brought their first league clean sheet of the campaign, the first in 23 top-flight matches.

The record against Spurs is hard to ignore too. Chelsea have won their last six Premier League meetings with Tottenham, their best run against them since 2002, while Spurs have won on just one of their last 36 league visits to Stamford Bridge.

Much of the improvement comes from the middle of the pitch. Jordan Henderson has become a calming influence, scoring twice against Bournemouth, while Moises Caicedo’s energy gives Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers a platform to work from. Add Pedro Neto and Joao Pedro and that front four have been involved in 22 league goals between them this season.

Tottenham will arrive in better spirits after Monday’s 3-1 win over Coventry, their first league victory of the season. James Maddison scored a stunning goal, Dejan Kulusevski returned after 526 days out and Roberto De Zerbi has finally eased some of the pressure.

However, Spurs had scored only three goals in their first six league games, and there is little depth at centre-forward behind Dominic Solanke, who has two competitive goals to his name. Chelsea’s attack should have too much for a side still building.

The Blues are not without their flaws. They were held 2-2 by Hull and beaten 3-0 at Brentford, and young goalkeeper Mike Penders will make his first Premier League start. Even so, Chelsea’s league games have already produced 30 goals, and their quality in attack makes them the pick at home.
