STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Coventry v Luton

After a long, tough season in the Championship, it all comes down to this. Coventry City face Luton Town at Wembley Stadium on Saturday afternoon for a place in the Premier League in what they call ‘the richest game in football’.

After picking up just three points from their first seven games this season – leaving them sitting rock bottom of the division – not many people would have predicted that Mark Robins’ side would go all the way through to the play-off final.

Not many people gave them a chance against Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough in the semi-finals of the play-offs either but – much like he has done the last six years since returning for a second spell with the club – Robins defied the odds by taking them to Wembley.

A superb counter-attacking goal, which the Sky Blues have become renowned for this season, by Gustavo Hamer was all it took to see off Boro and take Coventry to within one game of a return to the Premier League.

The main man that Luton will need to look out for in this final is surely Viktor Gyokeres. The Swedish striker, who joined from Brighton in 2021, is full of pace and power and has 21 league goals to his name this season.

Luton are another side who have defied the odds and the naysayers by reaching the Championship play-off final.

After Nathan Jones left for Southampton in November, I think many assumed that things would start to fall apart now the orchestrator behind so much of their recent success had departed.

In fact, things only got better once they appointed Rob Edwards as his replacement – who had been sacked by their arch rivals Watford months earlier – and has taken this team to the next level over the past few months.

Dynamic, exciting, tough to beat. Luton have been superb in the second half of this season and come into this final in superb form having gone unbeaten in their last 10 Championship matches of the regular season.

In Carlton Morris, they have a focal point at the top of the pitch who has proven himself in front of goal this season by bagging a very impressive 20 goals in the league with seven assists.

With so much at stake in this game, with potentially up to £170m in extra revenue up for grabs in the Premier League, I expect this game to be nervy and cagey and a low-scoring affair.

In a tight game like that, I would give Coventry the edge so will be backing a Sky Blues win and under 2.5 goals at 17/4 and a correct scoreline of 1-0 to Robins’ men at 13/2 with starsports.bet.
