STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: France Women v England Women

The Lionesses kick off their European Championship defence with a tough opener against France on Saturday evening, writes JOE CITRONE.

Things haven’t exactly been plain sailing for England in the build-up to this tournament. Goalkeeper Mary Earps announced her retirement from international football shortly before the tournament started, and Millie Bright has also ruled herself out, but they still find themselves at 9/2 with starsports.bet to defend their crown.

That is a testament to the quality that they possess, which they demonstrated in their final warm-up friendly against Jamaica where they hammered them 7-0, thanks to a brace from Ella Toone and strikes from Lucy Bronze, Georgia Stanway, Alessia Russo, Aggie Beever-Jones, and Beth Mead.

They face a much tougher test on Saturday, though, against a France side who have won all of their last six matches in all competitions.

⭐️ STARSPORTS.BET MATCH MARKETS ⭐️

Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman’s record in this competition is simply impeccable, though, having won all 12 of the Euro matches that she has taken charge of, so it isn’t any great surprise that England are the favourites for this one despite France’s qualities.

France also won’t be fielding former captain Wendie Renard or record scorer Eugenie le Sommer, who were both shock omissions from Laurent Bonadei’s squad, which may have Wiegman breathing a slight sigh of relief.

This should be a close match, but Wiegman’s record, coupled with England defeating France in their most recent meeting, has me swaying with the Lionesses and backing them to get their campaign off to a winning start at 7/5 with starsports.bet.
