STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Liverpool v Everton

Liverpool’s season has been one of drama, and the first Merseyside Derby of the season promises to be eventful, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

The Reds, who added tremendous attacking firepower during the transfer window, have made a blistering start to the season results wise, although their performances haven’t quite matched the results. All of their four Premier League wins – and their Champions League success against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday – have seen winning goals after the 80th minute, with Arne Slot’s side showing a champion’s mentality to pull victory from the jaws of defeat (or draws in their case).

Liverpool have already created plenty as one would expect, and we can expect more cohesive performances as the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz find their feet going forward, something that hasn’t been a problem for Hugo Ekitike, and it’s hard to begrudge victory against Atletico Madrid given the standard of their play (won the shout count 20-10 and the xG count 2.6 to 0.61).

They were much less impressive against Burnley when very fortunate that substitute Hannibal handled Jeremie Frimpong’s cross deep into five minutes of additional time, and they were maybe slightly lucky that Arsenal weren’t more adventurous when going to Anfield, as Dominik Szoboszlai’s incredible free-kick earned them three points.

Everton started the season poorly against Leeds but have quickly improved since, opening their account at Bramley-Moore Dock at the first time of asking against Brighton before a win at Wolves and a draw against Villa, when they were deserving of three points but were punished for two big misses from Beto.

The addition of Jack Grealish on loan has been a masterclass, with the ex-Manchester City man already playing a starring role, although the lack of a striker who can turn Grealish and Ndiaye’s quality into consistent goals looks set to hold them back unless Beto can get onto a scoring run.

That said, since Moyes returned Everton have improved rapidly – they’re eighth in a Premier League table consistently solely of gameweeks since January 11, Moyes’ first game back – and they made Liverpool work very hard for a 1-0 win in April when they were chasing the title, with only a moment of magic from the late Diogo Jota enough to separate the sides.

It’s easy to see Liverpool being asked to break down a disciplined low block once again at Anfield, and Moyes will have confidence that his Everton side can make life hard for the hosts, whilst there will be some opportunities on the counter-attack.

Liverpool games have mostly been goalfests so far, but this could be a much tighter affair and the 13/10 with starsports.bet that Liverpool win in a game containing under 3.5 goals could be real value. There have been only 13 goals in the last seven Merseyside derbies, and it could take Liverpool time to break down the Everton rearguard, which was the case here in April.
