STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Newcastle v West Ham

After reaching their first Wembley final since 1999 in mid-week, Newcastle United must now turn their attention back to their bid for a top-four spot when they take on West Ham United in the Premier League on Saturday.

There were jubilant scenes at St James’ Park on Tuesday when a 2-1 victory over Southampton was enough to get Eddie Howe’s side over the line and into the EFL Cup final after a 1-0 win in the first-leg.

They didn’t do it the easy way with some anxious scenes towards the end of the match after Bruno Guimaraes was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Samuel Edozie, but the Toon Army managed to see it out in the end.

Newcastle will be hoping for success in the league as well this season and look on course for a strong finish having gone unbeaten in their last 15 matches at St James’ Park and currently occupying 3rd-spot in the Premier League table.

After years of discontent and frustration from the Newcastle fans towards their team and, particularly, the ownership, there is now a really good feeling around the club.

Given how strong and consistent they look right now, it is hardly surprising to see a Toon Army win trading quite short at 4/7 with

Guimaraes will be suspended for this one after that sending off against Southampton and, with Jonjo Shelvey having left for Nottingham Forest late on in the January transfer window, that will likely mean a start for Sean Longstaff in the middle of the park.

West Ham United have suffered a difficult campaign off the back of a highly successful 21/22 season both in the Premier League and in Europe.

This decline in results has brought into question the future of David Moyes who is hanging by a thin thread at the moment and, although they did beat Everton in their last outing, could really do with a win against Newcastle to relieve some of that mounting pressure on his shoulders.

The Hammers have a few players on the treatment table at the moment with Maxwel Cornet, Gianluca Scamacca and Kurt Zouma all ruled out and January signing Danny Ings, who has only been in the building a matter of weeks, also a major doubt after picking up a knee problem.

Neither of these sides are free-flowing or particularly potent in attack so a goal-fest shouldn’t be expected here.

The home side will be expected to have the edge given how these two clubs’ seasons have shaped up so a bet of Newcastle and under 2.5 goals at 12/5 with is the one that looks most appealing for this Saturday afternoon clash.
