STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Southampton v Leicester City

On a weekend when some of the biggest clubs in the country face off, Southampton v Leicester City might not have the same appeal, but this could be a season and future-defining game for both of these clubs.

Southampton are rooted to the bottom of the table, and after a delayed firing of Ralph Hassenhuttl and the wacky weeks of Nathan Jones, it now falls upon first-time Head Coach Ruben Selles to try and save the Saints from relegation.

Positivity is in short supply at St Mary’s, especially after the midweek FA Cup exit to League Two Grimsby Town, however any sort of win against Leicester could lift the mood and whilst it wouldn’t be likely to lift the Saints – 1/3 to go down and 6/4 to finish bottom with – from the bottom-three, it would be a real boost.

Southampton have signed good players in both windows – Romeo Lavia is a player who could be well above the Saints’ level and Carlos Alcaraz is also a bright spark – but the current make-up of their squad appears to be simply unfit for the Premier League and their few wins have come from teams also in the relegation dogfight.

Leicester City had started to fare better in recent weeks with back-to-back wins against Aston Villa (4-2) and Tottenham (4-1) although meetings against Manchester United and Arsenal brought two defeats, and their 2-1 loss at home to Blackburn in the FA Cup will have been a bitter disappointment.

Defence has been their problem all season; they’ve conceded 42 goals – one more than Southampton – and have the joint second-worst record in this year’s table at the time of writing, whilst injury issues to James Maddison (Leicester have 1.24 points per game with him compared to 0.43 without) have also hit hard.

James Maddison is the top scorer for the club with nine in all competitions, whilst their three strikers in Kelechi Iheanacho, Patson Daka and Jamie Vardy can only muster 14 in all competitions between them, and his presence will play a big part in their fortunes.

This has been a rough season for both sides, but with James Maddison expected to be fit after a full week of training, Leicester make more appeal here and can take a crucial three points from St Mary’s.
