STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: Southampton v Man City

Southampton managed to spring a shock at St Mary’s against Manchester City in the EFL Cup, but the Citizens can avoid a repeat and keep their title charge up when they meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

City threw in their worst performance of the season when they visited in January, but better should be expected from them. Whilst the line-up that Guardiola put out should have been capable of better, Guardiola put Phil Foden in midfield, Kyle Walker at centre-back, and started Stefan Ortega, Sergio Gomez, an undercooked Kalvin Phillips and Cole Palmer.

That fixture was also sandwiched in between away trips to Chelsea and Manchester United in the Premier League, and whilst City do face Bayern next Wednesday, we can expect full commitment here as they keep the pressure on Arsenal.

They’ve won their last seven games in all competitions, coming from behind to take apart Liverpool at the Etihad in a statement win. A notable feature of that performance was how well Julian Alvarez slotted into the frontline as a replacement for the injured Erling Haaland, whilst Jack Grealish – now looking every inch the £100m signing from Aston Villa – delivered one of his best-ever performances.

On the other hand, Southampton – who are still 1/5 to go down with and 10/11 to finish bottom – have been fighting hard but appear to be facing a losing battle for their Premier League status.

Points against Manchester United and Tottenham are creditable results which show the grit that new manager Rubén Sellés has instilled, but they have lacked an attacking edge all season and they had precious little impact last weekend when they went 1-0 down to West Ham, with talisman James Ward-Prowse unable to influence the game.

Apart from Ward Prowse, Romeo Lavia was the only Saints player to have a proper impact going forward and Southampton will need to be much better if they’re going to trouble City, especially in midfield.

The visitors are capable of avenging their EFL Cup mishap in style here and can pass a one goal handicap at 8/11 with, whilst Jack Grealish can continue his fine run of form and looked a big price to score anytime at 13/5. The 9/5 on him assisting at anytime is also worth considering.
