STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sat: West Ham v Chelsea

West Ham and Chelsea have suffered tough seasons and there may not be much to separate them in their London Derby clash this weekend.

David Moyes’ charges have seen their form improve recently, with wins against Brentford and Wolves followed up by a point against Newcastle at St James’s Park last weekend. The hosts will take encouragement from the way that key names such as Nayef Aguerd, Lucas Paqueta and Declan Rice stepped up to the plate after a bad start – if they can continue in that same form then the Hammers should be able to progress up the table.

Chelsea have seen an avalanche of new arrivals join the club, some of whom were in action when they drew 0-0 against Fulham. New British record signing Enzo Fernandez made a confident start to his Chelsea career whilst Mykhailo Mudryk regressed from a promising debut against Liverpool as Chelsea struggled to make the clearer opportunities.

Blues fans will need to be patient – it will take time for the new arrivals to bed in, whilst key left back Reece James has only had an hour of gametime after a long absence – and it’s likely that this Chelsea side will be better as the season goes on, and Potter finds his best team.

There are almost too many options in attack – with Joao Felix now set to return after getting sent off on his Chelsea debut – and it’s hard to know what Potter’s preferred starting line-up is, or how effective they’ll be considering the lack of game time his forwards have had with each other.

All this makes 5/4 about the visitors, who have won just two of their last 12 Premier League games, seem short and the best way to play this could be backing West Ham to avoid defeat. It’s been a rough season for David Moyes and his men but recent results should have given them confidence and the way key players performed against Newcastle should give them plenty of confidence against a Chelsea side which is understandably lacking cohesion.

4/6 on them avoiding defeat is fair whilst the 11/5 on the draw is also interesting, as Chelsea have been held to stalemates in their last two league games.
