STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sun: Chelsea v Liverpool

Big things are expected of both Chelsea and Liverpool this season and it would be no surprise if their first game ended in a draw at Stamford Bridge.

An encounter that has always had plenty of edge in the modern era will become even more contentious with Moisés Caicedo the subject of a heated tug of war between the two sides at the time of writing, with Chelsea apparently frontrunners for his signature after Liverpool had supposedly hijacked the transfer with a British record transfer bid.

His presence on either side could be a gamechanger over the course of the season but in the here and now there may not be that much separating the two sides. Chelsea suffered one of their worst ever campaigns last season when Thomas Tuchel was sacked, Graham Potter simply couldn’t make the same impact he did at Brighton before Frank Lampard’s horrendous stint towards the end of the year, but under Mauricio Pochettino things should be different.

The Blues have enjoyed a productive transfer season – plenty of departures have slimmed down what was a bloated squad – and there’s plenty of talent for him to work with. New captain Reece James, Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, and Ben Chilwell can bring plenty to the defence whilst Enzo Fernandez is a top-quality midfielder and there’s potential for Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka, Nicolas Jackson and Mykhailo Mudryk to find their best form in a more stable environment.

Liverpool will also be hoping for a better season. After a campaign beset with issues including finishing struggles, empty gaps in midfield and a dreadful away record, they finished last season in style with seven wins in their last nine games and they’ve refreshed their squad over the summer in a big way.

Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino and James Milner have moved on whilst Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have arrived to give midfield ballast to a squad that is blessed with forward strength in depth. Mo Salah needs no introduction, Darwin Nunez has enjoyed the benefit of a season to bed into the Premier League, and one of Cody Gakpo and Diogo Jota can play anywhere across the frontline.

With Trent-Alexander Arnold thriving in a midfield role, Liverpool had a real edge to their attack at the end of last season and there’s no doubt they will be a threat going forward again although their defending could be a concern, particularly with a lack of a defensive midfielder a worry.

Long story short, there’s not much between these two sides on paper – and the match betting with starsports.bet suggests as much – and it would be no surprise if the two were level for the seventh match in a row. 13/5 about the draw with starsports.bet stands out.
