STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sun: Liverpool v Manchester United

Liverpool and Manchester United return to club action in one of English football’s biggest match ups and there’s a lot at stake for both teams, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI

Last season’s Champions, Liverpool have made a dramatic winning start to the season, with late wins against Bournemouth, Newcastle, Arsenal, Burnley, Atletico Madrid and Southampton to put together a seven-game winning streak. Their luck ran out when Crystal Palace and Galatasaray inflicted back-to-back defeats in the Premier and Champions Leagues, respectively, and Chelsea gave them a taste of their own medicine with a last-gasp winner before the international break.

Arne Slot has no end of attacking riches to call upon, but Liverpool haven’t yet found the balance they had last season. Conor Bradley and Milos Kerkez are struggling in both fullback positions, Ibrahima Konate has been out of form, Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah haven’t been at their best this season and Alexander Isak is taking a long time to reach anything like the level he showed for Newcastle last season.

Meanwhile, at Manchester United, Ruben Amorim got some relief with a comfortable 2-0 win against Sunderland at Old Trafford before the international break. The Portuguese will have been very pleased with the control shown by his side, with Senne Lammen having a solid debut in goal and Lenny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt impressing, but perhaps an even better sign came upfront, with Benjamin Sesko scoring for the second straight game whilst Mason Mount was arguably United’s best player upfront. Continued progress from Sesko, a 12/5 shot to score today with starsports.bet, would be a real boost for United’s prospects this season and Amorim will be hoping for more of the same.

United supporters will be hoping for more of the same going forward, but today’s a very different assignment, and their away form this season has been poor. United’s four matches on the road have seen two draws (Fulham and Grimsby) and two comprehensive defeats at the hands of rivals City and Brentford.

Indeed, since United’s 2-2 draw here in January – one of the better performances Amorim’s side gave last season – United have played 13 away games, lost seven, drawn four, and won only two.

Liverpool have been sketchy at times this season – defeats were coming in hindsight – but in Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea, they faced three tough away assignments which saw them lose due to last-minute goals, and both visual impressions and data suggest returning to Anfield should see an improvement in standards.

The hosts can regain the winning thread – Liverpool have won all five of their home games in all competitions this season – and the best value with starsports.bet may be to get goals onside. The only Liverpool game to go under 2.5 goals was their 1-0 win against a tentative Arsenal side here, and they’ve kept just two clean sheets in 11 matches.

Manchester United have only failed to score twice this term – against Arsenal and Manchester United, when they were unlucky not to have hit the back of the net on both occasions.

Liverpool to win and Over 1.5 goals appeals at 3/4 with starsports.bet, whilst Liverpool to win and both teams to score is too tempting to pass up at 13/8.
