STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sun: Luton v Manchester United

A lively Sunday afternoon clash sees Luton host in-form Manchester United as Erik ten Hag looks to continue the Red Devils momentum since the turn of the year, writes JOSHUA STACEY.

It’s been a tough season at Old Trafford, but after Scott McTominay’s late winner in United’s 2-1 win at Villa Park last weekend, the red side of Manchester find themselves five pointss off 5th spot in the Premier League. With Champions League qualification a possibility for fifth this season, the importance of three points at a rowdy Kenilworth Road this weekend cannot be understated.

Rob Edwards’ men sit just a point above the relegation zone, albeit with a game in hand over Everton in 18th place. Recent performances against Brighton and Newcastle have given Hatters fans optimism about survival, but last weekend’s 3-1 loss at home to Sheffield United put their feet firmly back on the ground.

United’s chances of Champion League qualification is certainly in the balance over the next month and if Luton Town can’t cause an upset, Erik ten Hag’s men will start to believe they’ve got a realistic chance of playing in Europe’s premier competition next season.

To make things worse for the Hatters, Manchester United’s £64 million man Rasmus Hojlund has found his shooting boots, netting in each of his last 5 Premier League games. With the Danish star looking unlikely to slow down in front of goal, Luton Town goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski may play a vital role if his side have any hope of getting a result on Sunday.

United’s form has picked up, largely down to an unchanged front three of Rashford, Hojlund and Garnacho, as well as a settled midfield three of Casemiro, Bruno and the emergence of academy prospect Kobbie Mainoo. Mainoo’s calming influence has given United much-needed composure when building out from the back.

Mature beyond his years, Erik ten Hag’s man isn’t just an A-B midfielder, providing a sublime late-winner at Molineux to keep his side in the hunt for Champions League qualification. With Alejandro Garnacho’s 4 goals in his last 6 starts, United’s future shines far brighter than it did 2-3 months ago.

VERDICT

United are really starting to gather momentum in the second half of the season and after Luton’s 3-1 loss at home to Sheffield United, I believe the recently potent Red Devills front 3 will taste blood and run away with this encounter. I’m predicting United will score early and punish the Hatters in both halves at 9/5.
