STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sun: Manchester United v Arsenal
Manchester United and Arsenal have served up some thrilling contests over the years, but there’s less on the line today when they meet at Old Trafford, and they could be involved in a relatively low scoring Super Sunday encounter, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.
In times gone by this used to be a title decider but United have lurched from crisis to crisis, whilst Arsenal, beset by key injuries, have been unable to keep pace with champions-elect Liverpool, lying a distant second.
The Gunners, who have struggled to cope with several key injuries during the campaign, received a much-needed boost to morale when putting an extraordinary seven goals past PSV in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie. Martin Odegaard scored twice, along with goals for Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, Ethan Nwaneri, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori, defying what has been a tough time in front of goal with no recognised striker after Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz suffered season-ending injuries.

Such a big result will put a much-needed spring in the Gunners step, although it’s worth remembering that the PSV result is an outlier in recent form. A week before Arsenal were unable to find a way past Nottingham Forest in a 0-0 draw where they dominated possession and won the shot count 13-6, and before then they were truly dreadful when deservedly beaten 1-0 by West Ham at the Emirates. Even before then, it took a late double from Mikel Merino to find a way past Leicester at the King Power, when the draw traded odds on, and banking on Arsenal to find a cutting edge could be risky here – Gabriel Martinelli is with the squad, but will surely not be anywhere near fully fit.
Manchester United meanwhile, continue to struggle. To their credit they played well in a 1-1 draw against Real Sociedad in midweek, when they ought to have pressed home a deserved advantage, but that performance again is an outlier.
They have lost five of their last seven league matches at Old Trafford, and have won only four matches since they were beaten 2-0 at the Emirates in December. A full line up of first-team players were missing for United in midweek, with Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte are both doubtful after missing the midweek draw with Real Sociedad, and United are being carried at times by Bruno Fernandes in midfield.
United’s last two games have ended up 1-1 draws whilst excluding the PSV romp, Arsenal’s last four games have gone under 2.5 goals, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if we had a tight encounter once again.
