STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Sun: West Ham v Chelsea

There’s been much off-field talk about Chelsea, but the Blues can do plenty of on-field talking with victory over West Ham in their London Derby on Saturday.

The Chelsea hierarchy have been busy hijacking Liverpool’s midfield targets of Moises Caicedo or Romeo Lavia – a pair of steals which will greatly enhance their chances this season – but fans have plenty to be excited about already based on what we’ve seen so far.

In Mauricio Pochettino Chelsea have brought in the best possible manager to rebuild from the disaster that was last season and they performed with great credit in a 1-1 draw against Liverpool last week. Initially overwhelmed by the intensity of Klopp’s side in the first 25 minutes, they responded impressively, with Axel Disasi earning a point thanks to a quick-thinking equaliser.

The Blues dominated the second half, forcing Alisson into fine saves from Ben Chilwell and new signing Nicolas Jackson, and the way they ended Pochettino’s first league game in charge suggests a bright season is ahead at the very least.

Nicolas Jackson caused plenty of problems for Liverpool’s defence, Ben Chilwell was excellent in an advanced role and Enzo Fernandes took control of proceedings from midfield to lay an impressive platform, especially in the second half.

Whilst Reece James’s injury is a blow – and we can expect West Ham to be more solid defensively, given that Liverpool had six forwards on the pitch including Cody Gakpo in the midfield – the possible debut of Moises Caicedo could give Chelsea an immediate edge and the Blues have shown more than enough quality to trouble any defence on last week’s evidence.

West Ham’s point at Bournemouth was well earned – Jarrod Bowen’s screamer gave them the lead and Tomas Soucek and Manchester City target Lucas Paqueta hit a post for West Ham in each half – and we should expect stiff resistance, but if Chelsea can find the same rhythms then the hammers could find this meeting to be a tough one.

Back the visitors to take bragging rights.
