STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Thu: Nottingham Forest v FC Midtjylland

European football returns to the City Ground for the first time since March 1996 when Nottingham Forest host Danish side Midtjylland, and the home faithful will be hoping for a much-needed victory tonight, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

Ange Postecoglou is the defending Europa League champion after salvaging Tottenham’s season with success in the last renewal, but he may not be afforded as much time at Forest, who are currently seven games without a win. That includes a loss at Sunderland and an agonising draw at Real Betis in their opening Europa League game when they lost a two goal lead late on to draw.

There some encouraging signs in Forest’s Europa League opener at Real Betis last week and will feel aggrieved by the nature of Sunderland’s winner at the weekend, with the visitors awarded a free-kick for simulation that eventually led to Omar Alderete’s winner.

Forest aren’t struggling to create chances or put pressure on opposition sides – they won the shot count 22-11 against Sunderland and the xG count 1.65 to 1.11, and against Betis they racked up a mighty 3.27 xG to boot – but the high-octane style of Postecoglou is something their defence hasn’t yet adapted to, as Forest haven’t kept a clean sheet in his five games there.

It’s probably a good time for Danish side Midtjylland to visit. Currently sitting second in the Danish SAS Ligaen, they’ve won four on the spin, including against Sturm Graz last week, and have scored two or more goals in 12 of their last 13 games so they will be confident of making their mark here.

They’ll need to improve to challenge Forest given that there was some fortune in their matchday 1 win against Sturm Graz – their goalkeeper Oliver Christensen was beaten for both goals when he should have kept the ball out – but they ought to be competitive at least based on what we’ve seen of Forest under Postcoglou so far.

? about the hosts with starsports.bet makes no appeal here, but they are making plenty of chances and they’ll be hopeful of getting some just rewards soon for their efforts. They’re still vulnerable defensively though, so the visitors can play their part in what could be an entertaining game for neutrals.
