WOMEN'S EURO 2025

STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Thu: Sweden (W) v England (W)

All eyes will be on Switzerland this evening as the Lionesses continue their defence of the Euros, but the chances of disappointment have been underrated by the odds, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.

Sarina Wiegman’s side brought national joy with their success on home soil four years ago and beat all but Spain at the 2023 World Cup, but things have not been quite so easy since.

The lead up to the tournament saw some off-field strife and a couple of below-par showings in the warm-up before a sloppy opening defeat to France put the pressure on. The Lionesses responded in exceptional style with a 4-0 win over the Netherlands and a 6-1 win over Wales when they filled their boots, with goals for Georgia Stanway, Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, Alessia Russo, Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones.

Finishing second, from an outright perspective, may actually help their chances as they’re on the opposite side of the draw from Spain, currently 4/5 with starsports.bet for the title, but they will have their hands very much full with Sweden, who have put together an impressive body of work over the last two years.

They were blown apart by England at in the last Euros at the semi-final stage but since then they have improved rapidly since. They only found Spain too good on their way to third place at the 2023 World Cup and they arrive here on a 15-game unbeaten run since July 2024.

Sweden had to work for a narrow 1-0 win over Denmark in their opener, but after easing past Poland 3-0 they produced a spectacular performance to come back from 1-0 down and trash Germany 4-1 thanks to goals from Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg, Fridolina Rolfo and Lina Hurtig.

In both those wins, they’ve had to break down stubborn defences before opening the game up and apart from an own goal in Zurich, they’ve been watertight at the back. Their head-to-head record suggests that they’re being underrated in the betting as well – they drew twice in qualification for this with a 1-1 stalemate at Wembley and 0-0 in Gothenburg.

There was precious little between the sides then, and based on what we’ve seen of them so far, that remains the case, so at the prices with starsports.bet, Sweden are the value call in what could be a thriller.
