STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Thurs: Notts County v Grimsby

After starting their season with two draws, Notts County will be looking for their first win of the League Two campaign when they welcome Grimsby Town to Meadow Lane on Thursday night, writes JOE CITRONE.

Despite losing top goalscorer Macauley Langstaff to Championship side Millwall this summer, there is optimism that this Notts County squad could sustain a promotion push this season, unlike the one that rather fell away last term.

Jodi Jones, who has just been named the division’s PFA Player of the Year for 2023/24, will be a player that Grimsby Town need to keep an eye on after breaking the all-time assists record for League Two last season.

Although they were defeated in their opening league fixture against Fleetwood Town, Grimsby defeated Cheltenham in their follow-up game which leaves them a point ahead of their Thursday opponents.

It was a high-scoring affair against Cheltenham, with a stoppage-time strike from Jordan Davies sealing a 3-2 win for the Mariners, which is in keeping with their last two meetings with Notts County.

The last meeting between these two clubs ended in an unbelievable 5-5 draw, and although I can’t see that happening again, goals should be on the menu once more on Thursday night.
