STAR FOOTBALL PREVIEW Weds: Everton v Liverpool
Whatever the result, we will see history made tonight as Everton host Liverpool in the final Merseyside Derby at Goodison Park, writes WILLIAM KEDJANYI.
In addition to being Goodison Park’s final Merseyside Derby, it’s also – like last season – sure to have an effect on the destination of the title. Liverpool are in control of proceedings with a six point lead, and this is their game in hand – three points here and they will be nine clear of the chasing pack, with second placed Arsenal having no effective forwards after Kai Havertz was ruled out for the rest of the season yesterday.
For Everton there’s the obvious history at stake – they leave Goodison at the end of the season and could give their fans a memorable night with a derby victory, whilst any result here would be crucial as they seek to put more space between themselves, 17th placed Wolves (7 ponts behind) and Leicester (nine points behind) who are facing the drop.

This game was postponed from 7th December due to adverse weather conditions caused by Storm Darragh, and that delay has definitely benefitted Everton, who replaced Sean Dyche with David Moyes, a decision that has come with immediate benefits thanks to three straight league wins.
Everton have refound their scoring form, with 3-2 and 4-0 wins over Tottenham and Leicester respectively, whilst they managed to grind out a 1-0 win at Brighton thanks to a penalty from the rejuvenated Iliman Ndiaye to boot.

Liverpool’s quadruple dreams were crushed by Plymouth on Sunday when a totally changed team went down 1-0, but the focus will have been on a key run of Premier League fixtures ( home matches against Wolves and Newcastle and away trips to Aston Villa and Manchester City before the end of February), and the Reds arrive here with a nearly totally fit and fresh squad, most of whom were last seen booking a spot in the EFL Cup final with a 4-0 trashing of Tottenham.
Led by Mo Salah upfront – who has a brilliant 21 goals and 13 assists in the Premier League this season – and backed up by key men Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Dominik Szoboszlai, Ryan Gravenberch and Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool have blazed a trail both at home and in Europe. Arne Slot’s men were extremely impressive when last in Premier League action, winning 2-0 at a Bournemouth side who have been exceptional at home all season, with wins against Arsenal, Nottingham Forest, and a draw against Newcastle.
That form reads extremely well with Bournemouth, 2-0 winners at Goodison in the FA Cup on Saturday, flying high in seventh, whilst Everton’s three wins have come against a Tottenham side Liverpool beat just as easily, a Brighton side that lost 7-0 at Nottingham Forest, and a Leicester side that is odds on to go down.
Facing Liverpool will be a very different test, although it should be noted we are dealing with a side that will have home backing, endless motivation and confidence for a Derby that has been tight in recent seasons.
Eleven of the last 13 meetings and all of the last five have gone under 2.5 goals, whilst of course Sean Dyche dealt Liverpool’s title ambitions a huge blow last season. It would be no surprise if we saw another blood and thunder game between the two, with the starsports.bet match prices looking about right.
The preference is to be with Liverpool in some way, although given Everton’s recent uptick in form and previous Derbies, handicap markets don’t appeal. Liverpool to win and Under 3.5 goals is fairly priced, but for slightly more value, dutching the 1-0 and 2-0 correct score results makes appeal.
