STAR GOLF PREVIEW Thurs: Houston Open

It’s getting close to Masters time!

And it’s for that reason that the PGA have historically set up this week’s Houston Open to mimic Masters conditions. As a lengthy 7,412-yard par 71, with steep shaved run offs and small greens, Memorial Park is a searching test of any pro’s all round game. Long-range ball striking and effective scrambling will be at a premium this week.

Scottie Scheffler or as I like to call him, The Machine, returns to his native Texas and is without doubt the Big Dog in the field. He’ll be hard to get past – which is reflected in odds of ? to win again this week with – but as always my mission is to try and spot the value lurking in the long grass.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Sam Bennett – Currently at ? with

Bennett was the young amateur break-out sensation last year at Augusta, who challenged for the Green Jacket before eventually just coming up short. He quickly turned pro afterwards and has had an up and down time on tour so far. He’ll be back at his happy hunting ground of Augusta National in a couple of weeks and I think he will enjoy these similar conditions. Bennett will want to hit the ground running leading up to Augusta and could be a lovely bit of each-way value here.

Adam Svensson – Currently at ? with

When Svensson hit the front last week, a shudder ran through me. I’ve been following this guy all year and wasn’t on him for once due to his abject play the week before. That’s the problem with the young Canadian. He’s hard to follow because his rounds veer from the sublime to the ridiculous. I’m back with him in Houston because I remain convinced that he is well overdue to string four good rounds together and come in at a great price.

Ryan Fox – Currently at ? with

The plethora of long par fours at Memorial Park demands a great deal of ball striking from long distance. If you have a mix of natural power and a low ball flight that can be very helpful at what can be a windy venue in Houston. Fox is well suited for the test this week, my concern is that he keeps getting into contention and then throwing all his good work away with a couple of woeful holes. If he can rule that out, he should be in amongst it come the weekend.

Keith Mitchell – Currently at ? with

In what was a particularly galling turn of events last week, my man ‘Cashmere Keith’, tipped up on here at 40/1 beforehand, was travelling beautifully towards the win. He started the final round two shots ahead of the field and looked set to repay my enduring belief in him. He then went out and had a ‘Barry Crocker’. (shocker, for those not familiar with cockney rhyming slang.) That was a real kick in the golf ball bag, but with the benefit of perspective, I can see he had three really solid rounds and just had one of those days on Sunday. He continues to trend well and is close to that win, so I’m not going to abandon the Cashmere kid just yet.
