STAR GOLF PREVIEW Thurs: The American Express

If you had Grayson Murray last week at the Sony Open, perhaps go and buy a lotto with some of those winnings.

We might have had the outsider of the season hit in week 2 of the year.

The PGA Tour is on the mainland for the first time in the 2024 American Express Championship. It’s a three-course rotation across the PGA West in LA Qunita California.

As I’ve stated before, I really dislike these multi-course formats over the first three days because they throw in so many variables on any given day across the courses.

But I’ll put on my big boy pants and try and dig out some value in what is one of these new PGA Tour premier events and as a consequence is a high-quality field.

Blue Horseshoe Loves:

Keith Mitchell – Currently ? with

Mitchell was travelling well in Hawaii last week, hanging around the top of the leaderboard by the end of round three, until a flat final round scuppered his chances. I’m going to stick with Keith because he likes Californian courses, where it is second shot based. This guy should have won more than he has. But make no mistake, Mitchell is good enough to seal the deal at a very nice price.

Eric Cole – Currently at ? with

My mate Adam will be pleased to see Eric Cole back up on my radar this week. He asked about my mental well-being after I didn’t pick him last week. Rest easy Adam, he’s back on my selection list this week. All of these three courses are short courses with the emphasis squarely on second shot accuracy. As we’ve all seen by now, Cole excels in this and I think he’ll be in the reckoning this week.

Cam Davis – Currently at ? with

This guy is such a frustrating follow. He swings from red hot to ice cold in a round, but he looked really good for a couple of rounds in Hawaii and I think his game is building momentum. He’s got bags of ability and none of these courses should pose many problems for Davis. The courses are wide, fairly lacking in hazards and his length will see him with plenty of scoring opportunities.

Lee Hodges – Currently at ? with

My each way exotic for the week is Lee Hodges. If you know, you know.
