A nice little win for us at The Houston Open with Tony Finau. As I said in my preview last week; Finau has turned a major corner mentally and more importantly with his putting stroke. If you like Tony for any of the majors in 2023, I’d say get on board. In his current form I can see him fighting out the finish in at least one or two of them next year.

This week The PGA Tour is at Sea Island Resort in Georgia. It’s a multi course format with the field alternating between the Seaside and Plantation courses on Thursday and Friday. Once the cut is made the field will revert to the Seaside course for Saturday and Sunday.

Accuracy is the key this week with both courses running out at just over 7000 yards. Seaside is a par 70 and Plantation is a par 72. Both courses are tight, turning tracks with small Bermuda greens. If the winds get up both courses get far harder due to the narrowness of the fairways and the shallowness of the greens.
This is a ball strikers paradise. I’m looking for straight drivers and players who excel in the approach to the green stats.

Blue Horseshoe Loves

Mackenzie Hughes – Currently ? with

Hughes finished second here last year. He is putting the lights out this season. That’s proven by the fact that he’s sitting inside the top ten in putting stats on tour. He’s also sitting just outside the top ten on scoring average for the season. Last but not least, he’s currently sitting 3rd in the Fedex Cup standings. If Mackenzie Hughes isn’t there or thereabouts come Sunday, I’ll be stunned.

Tom Hoge – Currently ? with

Hoge sits inside the top 10 in greens in regulation this season. He also sits inside the top 20 in scoring average. Hoge is not long, but his iron game is becoming one of the best on tour. This course suits his game well, as testified by his fourth-place finish here last year. Hoge is one of the class horses in this field and I’m expecting him to add to his PGA Tour winning tally in the not too distant future.

Matthew Nesmith – Currently ? with

Nesmith has had 3 top ten finishes this season. He is recognized as one of the best ball strikers on tour. Where he tends to struggle is on the greens, but I’m going to go with him for two reasons: 1. Because he is in such superb form with his irons in particular. And 2. This is a course that will suit his game down to the ground.

Brendon Todd – Currently ? with

Todd is a short track specialist. He is one of the shortest drivers on tour, but he is also one of the straightest. He’s also an excellent putter. If Mr. Todd gets away well and starts feeling good, he is well able to begin rolling in birdies in bunches. As an alternative betting option, he’s a good shout for a Top 10 Finish.
