It reminds us of our abilities and that sporting competition is one of the pinnacles of true human drama. It takes us away from the troubles of the everyday world for a while and boy, do we need those soothing green vistas of Augusta National this week.

These days, I’m old, cynical man. but the Masters awakens an excitement and enthusiasm within me that I seldom feel anymore. There is also the enjoyment of watching your man, or men, negotiate their way around the fiendishly testing track with those lightening greens.

The pin up boy of mullet enthusiasts everywhere, Cam Smith has been in fairly awful form over the last few majors, but Augusta seems to being something out in the Aussie Battler. He’s always had sensational touch around the green and as long as he can keep out of trouble of the tee’s, he’ll be a live chance if he’s in the neighbourhood come the weekend.

Nico is fresh off winning form on the PGA Tour. He’s a wonderful iron player and a generally pretty straight driver. I know it’s his first time here, and that’s aways tough, but I think the course should suit his great ball striking game and he looks absolutely fantastic value to me each way.

This guy wrecks my head. He is so talented and has notched up multiple wins on tour, but he has thrown away his fair share too. I wasn’t naturally leaning towards Burns this week, but I just cannot ignore his odds. Sam Burns has the game to win majors and is currently one of the best putters in the game. If he can start firing darts, he could be very hard to stop.

A real left field speculator to finish, so take heed of the wealth warning. I’ve been a fan of Novak’s game for some time now and he repaid my faith with a PGA Tour win last year. His price is right out with the veterans and amateurs, even Tiger Woods was trading under Novak’s price this week! That’s just plain wrong. Novak is a far better prospect than that. He’s a really tidy iron player and seldom gets in trouble off the tee. An each way poke, but if he comes in I’m gonna look like a bloody genius.
