STAR GOLF PREVIEW Wed: Spanish Open and Baycurrent Classic

I think there are a couple of value opportunities in the golfing world this week, writes BLUE HORSESHOE.

In the Spanish Open, I like the look of Bernd Weisberger. He’s any old money to win, which is possible but might be a stretch for old Bernd. Where I see the real value is in a top ten finish. Bernd has one of these broomstick putters that you have to anchor to your chest. This is a new piece of kit for the Austrian who is a multiple-time winner on the European Tour. The new putter was working a treat for him at the British Masters a few weeks ago. He hung around the top of the leaderboard for three days but eventually fell away a little with a fairly pedestrian final round. But all in all, I like what I saw, as putting has been an issue for him late in his career. For mine, he’s over the odds for a player of his class and I’m going to take him for a top ten finish.

The PGA Tour heads to Japan and Yokohama Country Club for the Baycurrent Classic. It’s a weird time of year on the PGA tour, almost a nether region, where the old season is ending and a new season is beginning. We won’t see all the big names out again until January at the Sentry Tournament in Hawaii.

This seasonal wrap-around is a good time to hunt for promising young players with value in them. Mac Meissner is a young guy that I’ve been very impressed with this year. He’s been close to that first win a couple of times, and he seems to be a really solid player tee to green with precious few gaps in his game. The market has caught up to him a little, but there’s still some juice there for each/way or Top 5/10 finish fans.

Aldrich Potgieter (recorded his first win on the PGA tour earlier this year and I’m happy to report I was on him for it. That was no fluke, there’s a lot more wins in this lad. He hits it a mile and has lovely soft hands around the green. Get involved with him while there’s still value in him because if he carries on the way he’s been going it’ll be all gone soon.

And my last selection for the Baycurrent is my old friend Lee Hodges. Long-time readers of mine will know this name well. He started terribly at Sanderson Farms last week. But finished strong to not only make the cut but finish in a top thirty position. Hodges can play; he just has to put four good rounds together. This is not a stacked field, and I thinkhe  can carry on his momentum for a top 10 finish.
